Sweeney Todd Razor

So I just got the Sweeney Todd razor to see if I can make it shave. First this thing is HEAVY, the grind and bevel are knife like and not like a razor at all. It is almost a true wedge with a big secondary bevel. They did not send me the true replica and the razor is different than the one from the picture. But what due I expect for $7.00.

Look at the weight

My TI LeGrelot is 60 grams.

Here is a picture of the blade after five minutes on the DMT 600, I'm not making a dent in setting the bevel.

i may take it to the grinder to hollow some out or even better is to swap it out for a GD blade.

This was the same problem I had with the Crowing Rooster and a couple of others. Knife blades are what they are - for the most part. The first few, I tried to set the bevel with the DMT. Took hours. Now, if I want to try one, I put it on the belt sander and get the bevel in shape. Takes minutes. Also, I put several layers of tape to make up for the narrow spine. Didn't matter much - the ones I tried wouldn't hold an edge for long.

So I finally got it shave ready

The original blade is crap.

The scales are heavy, heavy, heavy. Not sure how it will handle.

What did the picture on the sale represent?
Did it at least show proper blade shape and size?
I'd have shipped that piece of junk back, except it's not worth it for $7.

Al,

I think its worth the time to set the bevel on the thing. I suspect everyone knew this razor wasn't going to threaten TI, but the question in my mind wasn't is the Sweeney Todd razor a good shaver, but can the Sweeney Todd razor shave period.

Except that's not even the Sweeney Todd razor.

What was discussed in the original thread at least had the correct size and blade shape. The scales were not correct, but were at least a true 3D engraving and not this laser-etched gothic/spiderweb mess.

OK, but if I ordered the "sweeney todd" razor like Al did, then I would presumably receive the same thing, which is what this was all about

I looked at the reviews and customer images on the $7 razor on Amazon and it appears that some customers got what Doc got (which is an Azrael "Straight razor knife") and some customers got the correctly shaped Sweeney Todd blade and scales pictured in the other thread.

Is the correctly shaped one from Pakistan?

The scale shows how heavy this thing is, almost 3 times heavier than a regular one.
I would have shipped it back too, but not worth it.

Agree, not the same thing.

Thank you my Good Man....

But it just confuses me more..as some people say it's almost shave ready..and some not so...

Many thanks for that speedy link !!!

i would be cautious with stuff like this. to me, it looks more like a deco piece. i buy only antiques now. back when they made them right.

You're welcome, I came across it researching for a shavette on amazon and it left an impression on me as it looks like a nice novelty and it was cheap. When I saw you post I knew exactly where to go.

Dude, for $7 bucks I highly doubt you're going to regret it, even if it doesnt shave right it's still something that must've caught your attention so I say get it, hone it and see for yourself if it works. If it's a *** at least it'll be a nice ***, lmao... Shipping is pretty cheap for items sold by amazon and free if you buy $25 worth of stuff.

For the price...I guess , like you say, i should get it...and see what comes out of it . ( I won't lose much, money wise )

Being a REAL newbie..I still have an open mind..due to my lack of know-how !!! LOL ( That new straight razor thing change my perception ...as I don't see my kitchen knifes the same way now ...Hehehe )

..and being an eternal optimist...I'm sure if you hone a credit card just right...you could shave with it ! Lol

Thanks for your opinion...and link ! :001_smile
