Your statement would be correct IF the dial ROTATED the blade angle. However the dial curves the blade, which should create a parabolic change in the blade gap, and not a linear adjustment curve.

The plate pushes the blade onto the bottom of the door, blade curvature remains the same from 1 to 9. Blade angle changes, but only in relation to the safety bar.

[Shaving like a boss]

I keep hearing about soaking in this and that. I had a non adjustable that was gunked up terribly so I soaked it in near boiling water, then when cooled just a bit I dropped in 2 denture cleaning tablets. Voila, things cleaned up nicely. I left it to soak overnight then rinsed well.
