Straight Razor Artisans

Hey y’all

I’ve just gotten into SR shaving recently after being on DE for a while. Picked up a Ralf Aust 5/8 round tip for first razor sense it was generally recommended for beginners as far as size and blade tip style.

Now I find myself going down the SR rabbit hole looking for nice razors. Problem is, unlike DE where I know all the artisans, I’m fairly clueless as to who their counterparts are in the SR world.

Any suggestions? I know prices will vary but want to get them on my radar. So far I have found Max Sprecher, Portland Razor Co, Shave Smith. That’s really it from just a cursory search. Who else should I be looking at?

I'm looking at Brian Brown razors. Haven’t bit yet, as I have one of those razors from Riga stalled in the post. Tennessee is a lot closer than Latvia.

Forgot to say, I am very happy with my Portland Razor Co razors, but they are the older O1 carbon steel blades. Great company, earns its support.

Yeah I could use the lesson on steel. Portland’s 01 steel is their higher grade if I read their info correctly. I think the entry level razor (which still looks very nice) are their “cascade steel”. Not sure what the difference is.

For one thing, the Cascade steel is stainless, which (I think) is meant to handle a Barbicide without degrading or discoloring. They are very interested in getting barbers and stylists converted to using SRs instead of shavettes.

I’d also be interested to know of anyone that does razor rescaling. Currently looking at a pair late production CVH MK31. Excellent condition but imitation ivory scaled. Would like to replace with real wood or real horn. Australia or European location preferred for shipping reasons.

Girls call me Makaluod
I can add
  • Revisor Solingen.
If you define artisan as a business where there are five persons or less that make all the straight razors I could also add
  • Wacker
  • Thiers Issard
And most likely also;
  • Dovo
  • Böker
The last two companies does also make other products, as does Thiers Issard.
And in your last group is Titan.

When you think about it, there are probably not many people in the world who are actually engaged in the making of traditional straight razors.

One day, Gillette may mechanise it when they introduce the self-sharpening SR they should be developing. I'm not sure which they'll produce first, the self-sharpening model or the never-needs-sharpening model.
