Story of your Best Score Ever?

Let's share the story of the best razor score we've ever had.

About 6 months ago I was introduced to DE Shaving by a friend who owned a Merkur, and I thought I'd give it a try. I went to an antique store in a small Canadian town and bought my first DE razor. It was in mint condition and marked $35 so I offered $30 and he accepted. I shaved with it for about a week and really fell in love with it - so I thought I'd do some research and maybe start a collection. It was then that I figured out what a deal I had made.

I introduce, my $30 first DE purchase.

My best score is an Apollo Mikron for $12 dollars. They seldom appear on ebay, and when then do they bring serious prices!

Honorable mention is a Gillette Slim for $5 dollars.

I got both razors at the same antique store, about 2 weeks apart. I need to revisit that store. :biggrin1:

I've always felt guilty that I didn't leave generous tips for the clerk!

30$ for that set?! That would be the starting auction price on the bay for Red Rings in such great condition! Awesome score and like Mark said, try beating that for the rest of your life!

Not shave related but.....

Last year I was walking our dog around the neighborhood and spotted a young girl struggling to put a rather large stereo speaker at the curb. I asked what was up and she said. "They are too big to move so we are tossing them out".

That great pair of Klipsch speakers now reside here.

I picked up a Fatboy and a slim adjustable for $5 each a few weeks ago at an antique store. I think it'll be hard for me to beat that.

Nice score!

I don't expect that ever to happen to me. I live near far too many people...

My best scores, shaving related or otherwise, are always reasonable prices, never killer deals. But I can dream!

I found a re-branded Somerset era Simpson (George F. Trumper) Chubby 1, Chubby 2 and Chubby 3 for $30 plus shipping on Etsy. They are the brushes in my avatar. I think I did OK. I wasn't going to buy them, but I just couldn't pass them up.

Oddly enough it wasn't the $5 Toggles that I found a month apart back to back, or the Hoffirtiz etc. Instead it was the Lady Blue that got me excited while at an estate sale. This one my wife had expressed interest in and finding one mint was hard. While at that warehouse where the gent had stored everything he had a cased single ring, gold milady,(not pictured) and the Lady blue.

Maybe the moral of this story is to get out there and shop around the antique stores and estate sales. I'm still looking for my lucky score.

Got me a cased US Rhodium Executive (the one in the "ostrich leather" case) technically for free. I paid $48 for a lot that included it and three other razors which I cleaned up and sold back for around $60.

My first razor I bought was a cased, mint Sheraton. I was brand new to the scene and for some reason "knew" it was a super speed. I haggled the guy from $30 to $20 and almost walked away when he wouldn't budge from $25. I felt bad when months later I realized what it actually was.

I have to say the box that I picked up for Christmas is my biggest and best score.

Pocket edition Flower in gunmetal with gold razor in fair condition
Wooden Box Big Fellow in great contition
NIB Autostrop
40's SS
Keen Kutter Blue Steel straight

Were the things that I was interested in and paid $125 for.

Also in the mix were some original boxed and paper work stropping machines, barber hones, NOS Gillette DE blades, W&B DE blade, NOS Personna injector and DE hollow ground blades, and a Rolls Razor in the box with paperwork and an extra blade.

To top off the deal, the guy threw in a 1960 Fatboy and Slim that were really dirty and he didn't think that I would want. They cleaned up beautifully! And the last topper was that he had a few fountain pens and threw one in the box before I left. I knew nothing about pens and cam to find that the pen is a 50's Parker Duofold! I am getting ready to ship out and have it restored.

I am very happy and think that this was a great score!
