Storing your safety and straight razors with a pack of silica (dessicant) gel

I've been keeping the small packs of silica gel that I get from various purchases to control the humidity around my razors. I have found them in shoe boxes, Japanese rice crackers, tinned cookies, chocolates and basically anything where moisture could harm the products. Well I thought why not stick a pack or two in my 7 day straight razor box. I also keep a pack lying on my dresser and after my daily shave, I'll dry off my razor and place right on top of the pack of silica gel. By doing this I believe the silica removes all the moisture that may still be sitting on the edge of the blade and in the tiny crevasses of my razors. Does anyone else do this? Any thoughts?

Sounds like overkill to me. I could see using the silica packs for long term storage, but for something you use every day, I don't think it's necessary.

I rinse off my razor and blade, blow off the excess water with lung power, and set it inside my lather bowl if it's loaded with a blade, or back in the drawer with my other gear if its not. Never had any problems with rust or anything.

I recently converted a top drawer into my razor case and i installed one of these into the drawer.http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=799452 The reason... I have some nice razors i dont use that i want to make sure keep there finish...

Wow those things are only $4 and they are rechargeable in the oven! Is Midway located in Washington? If so I can drive down there and pick it up. It seems that they don't deliver to Canada. :(

Probably not a bad idea and I have thought about doing this myself. The one thing you have to be careful of is if you have straights with natural handles. Bone, horn and especially ivory like to have some moisture in the air or they dry out and crack. The plasticisers in some synthetic materials will dessicate and become brittle too.

Mmm I never thought about that. I really only use the dessicant pack after I shave by placing the dried razor on the pack for the day. The next day I remove it and replace with the next razor in my rotation.

I don't see a desiccant as being much use for something used daily or semi daily. It takes time for them to actually absorb the moisture, how much I don't know.

I'd be more afraid of the desiccant drying out the wood of the dresser than any moisture in the drawer affecting my shave gear. My shave gear is also kept in a dresser drawer. I just line the bottom with a cotton towel. Brushes and any wet razors are kept on top of the dresser.

This unused 1941 Aristocrat was found in my stepfather's dresser when he passed away. It held up pretty well, without any help, sitting unprotected in his shirt drawer for all those years.

Spraying alcohol from a misting bottle will displace the water in the cracks & crevices of a razor. And then the alcohol evaporates. I can see using the silica gel packs for humidity in the room, but I can't picture them actually pulling water out and away from the crevices in the water.
