Storing concealed carry gun in hot car bad for ammo?

I usually leave my concealed carry gun locked in my glove box while I'm at work, since I can't carry there. I know that the ammo will not go off in a hot car(saw that Mythbusters episode :biggrin1:)...but does the heat degrade the ammo?

My car was broken into and the gun was stolen. If this happens, you could be cited for negligence, and lose your permit to carry.
I'd invest in an automobile gun safe

Im not to worried about it being stolen at work since I park in a secure gated area in a police department(police dispatcher). But definitely something to think about investing in.

I had a gun in the car in Madison for years along with extra ammo in my bag and never had a round not go pop on the range. I'd say you'll be fine. Cheapest gun safes I've seen are a cable lock version that you put around the seat post and it fits under the seat. Should run you around $20 and be well worth it.

High temp storage will eventually degrade the ammo, but in my experience biannual qualification shooting the carried ammo uses it up before any appreciable damage occurs. In common terms, practice with what you carry, and shoot your carry ammo and replace it with new. Then no problem.

It can happen but I personally never had any issues and that after shooting a box of 357 CCI Blazer that was stored in a truck tool box for 18 years. If 18 years of ARKANSAS hot and cold weather didn't hurt it I don't don't know how long it would take.

When I was young and dumb, I was given a box of .38 by a very old man who got it out of his hot attic.. It was made by S&W and was probably over 75 years old. I guess he assumed I would treasure it as a collectable, but I didn't know any better then. Every one of those rounds fired without a hitch.

Agreed, no harm, as ammo should be shot up before any degradation( if that even exists, which I doubt),,,,,think of all the military ammo storage in the desert heat of Afgan and Iraq,,,,

Sadly no. Only sworn officers allowed to have weapons.

Every PD I have seen and been in, have lock up areas for firearms. Seriously, you can't lock it up in the area designated for this purpose? If you can't I would leave it at home. Leaving a firearm in an unattended vehicle is not a good idea, especially on a daily basis

We occasionally had a round "cook off" while sitting in an ammo can on top of a truck, but not too often. Maybe twice over the course of my first deployment (18 months). But then again you have to consider the temperature (~130F) and the jarring around while moving. I wouldn't think that a hot car would be too much of an issue.

Haha, Mick you obviously don't live in Madison. They'd take away the PD's guns if they thought they could get away with it.

If it's anything like Federal buildings, you can't even bring it in the door. Yeah, even if you work there. Even if you spend all day around all of your coworkers wth their guns lying around... you can be trusted for that, but not to have your own pocketknife.
