"Sticky" & Palmolive Stick

I have read a thread about the cheapest shave available.Well today I bought a Palmolive stick from Morrisons (49p) and will use it tomorrow with my dad´s Wilkinson´s "sticky" razor (0p).The blade will be a Personna in white. So tomorrow will be a sticky stick day.:tongue_sm

I will lather on my face and with a bowl in following days.It is also going to be the first time to use the Wilko.

At the moment I am using La Toja cream and a HD with the same blade.

Does the current going-price of the razor count? Borrowing a razor surely doesn't cost money, but if you're looking for a cheap regular razor of your own (the sustainable cheap shave), the Sticky probably doesn't count as it is probably one of the most expensive vintage DEs you can buy, often going for $100+. Or have I confused it with something else?

I certainly do hope you are using a decent boar brush in this set-up. If not it will not count as a budget shave.

Currently I use a Merkur HD.The brush is a Vie Long bristle.AS is now Old Spice and just finished Floïd.All non expensive stuff as you can see.

I was surprised to see the prizes of the Sticky.Unfortunately mine (my dad does no longer use it) has some minor scratches and one of the doors needs to be squeezed to position once closed due to a nick on the side.you can see some pics of it here http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=128808

Well gentlemen,here is my experience.

I liked the Palmolive scent. It brings to me memories of clean and fresh soaps.Nothing to do with La Toja barber´s scent. It also is more moisteruzing than La Toja but the lather is thinner.I built it on the face and scrubbed the stick against the whiskers before lathering each pass.I like it and tomorrow will do it again on the face.

The Sticky.I am only DE shaving for a month. So I have not much experience.IMO it is a gentle razor compared to the HD.Lately I only do 2 passes with HD and some little touches here and there.Today I had 3 and still found some stubble on the jaw line.I think it is a matter of technic so I will keep this month.

One thing is true:I am really having fun and enjoying!!!!!!!!!!!!

:001_smileAnd today was the second shave. The difference in the prep with yesterday is that I showered first and exfoliated the skin with L´Occitane Cade product.

I applied more soap on the face than yesterday so that I had more lather left on the brush.Last night I read a little about straight razor technique etc (looks too hard for me at the moment, but who knows?) and I had read before that each razor has its own learning curve. It is true!! Today I payed more atention to the angle, opened the grip a bit more instead of holding it by the end as with the HD.Only 2 passes WTG and ATG and some touchups.

I find that the angle should be less than 30º to get nice results. But it is a big change from the Merkur,The Sticky is milder,it has a more elegant shaving so to say.And the nick name Sticky is very appropiate:the blue plastic handle provides a sticky, non slippery grip.

The Palmolive soap is also great, nice lather and it makes the razor glide on it.
Tomorrow Iwill lather in the bowl.

The third shave today. No special prep.I wet the brush in hot water and swirled it for half a minute or so on the soap stick and then to the bowl.had to had some drops of water to build the lather, much thicker this time. For the second pass I had to use the soap stick to creat more lather because the one left in the bowl was not enough.

I am getting better results from the Sticky each day but I still prefer the HD.Today I had to touch up several times.

For tomorrow I have a special feature.I have grated 2 Palmolive sticks to a ramekin and tomorrow I am going to start to make the lather from that puck instead of the stick. It really was fun making the new puck, lets see the results

And today it was great making the lather from the home made soap cake!!!
I swirled the wet brush on it and built the lather in the bowl and kept it warm with the big mug,my scuttle hehehehe.I LOVE warm lather, nothing to do with building it on the face.

The Personna blade (white box,no stamp on the blade) I think is getting its time.I did it some honing on my hand to get the last shave from it tomorrow.I still feel homesick for the HD.The Sticky is so gentle or i think so at least. But I will keep using it until the end of the month, except for my travel to Spain.

In Spain will keep rotating Palmolive with La Toja sticks and will bring some sticks over to grate and make a cake.

Thank you for reading this thread and all opinions are wellcome

I've done this too. Worked very well indeed and it must be the cheapest puck of shaving soap you can get in the UK at less than a pound for the two sticks.
