What's new

Soon no more fat in AOS?

AOS web site no longer lists Tallow as an ingredient in their shave soap. Their in store stock still lists tallow and the know-nothing sales staff had no answer. I E-mailed their web site and am waiting for an answer. I suspect we're loosing another great product.

Standing by to hear what they tell you....

In the meantime, I may just have to swing in an AOS store over the weekend.

I have mixed feelings.

It's a soap I really, really want to try, but if they muck it up, then I can write it off....

Nobody over-react.

This particular ad copy has been on the site for quite a few months, and the product is still tallow based.

Just because they don't specifically mention tallow doesn't mean it's not there.

Shaving Soap
For the traditional wet shaving experience, The Art of Shaving offers their classic Shaving Soaps. Formulated with glycerin and coconut oil, they generate a rich lather when used with a shaving brush and hot water. The lather protects the skin and softens the beard while providing an extremely close shave. The soaps come in elegant teak wood bowls, which can be refilled.

Where do you see ingredients on their website? I see some marketing stuff, but nothing with a real ingredients list (which would be the real smoking gun).

I've got a brand-new puck from the Beauty.com sale (it just got delivered this afternoon), and the blurb on the back reads

The Art of Shaving traditional Shaving Soap is formulated with glycerin and coconut oil to generate a rich and lubricated lather....

However, the first item on the ingredients list (on the same box) is sodium tallowate.

I think AoS is trying to deemphasize the tallow (since P&G is trying to reach a broader audience that doesn't associate animal fat with great shaves ), but they've got no reason to reformulate their soap, since they just buy that from an Italian company anyhow. Now, if the Italians reformulate, we're in trouble, but it looks like AoS is safe for the time being.

Yep, their website has been a source of reformulation freak outs for some time now.

They've said the same thing on the website for years now. It happens to be accurate - there is glycerin and coconut oil in the soap. "Tallow" is not a selling point to the masses.

This rumor has run through here a couple of times since I've been a member. I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm not that worried for now because I have a few year's supply of AOS and probably use more Tabac and MWF. I guess I just don't trust P&G with any product that is good. They can mess up an iron ball.

fyi Czech & Speake and Valobra soaps are all but identical to AoS, with different scents. Valobra make AoS soaps for them so that will be around forever in all likelihood.

Very true. Have we ever seen a reformulation of an italian product? Other than some getting discontinued (P 160 I'm looking at you :sneaky2:), I think we are set on tallowy goodness from italy. :thumbup1:

I was in the Mn. store and they stated no fat.

There've been several reports of sales clerks erroneously claiming that it's not tallow-based...probably told so to convince vegetarians to buy a tallow-based soap or something of the like. Grab a puck off the shelf and look at the ingredients...tallow will top the list.

Someone would obfuscate about the TRUE nature of their product? THE HORROR!
:lol::lol::lol:

And consider this gents. For all the unwarranted b.s. AOS takes on shave forums, as far as I can tell only they and Castle Forbes have NOT reformulated their shave lathers. How about that? All our British faves have done it and most of the American brands ceased to exist or in any real upscale fashion decades ago.

I don't know gents. Bean counters can screw up anything but I SERIOUSLY doubt Proctor and Gamble bought AOS with the intent of destroying it. If you Google the acquisition, you will find P&G were deliberately trying to get into the HIGH END market. They already own the consumer discount market. They don't need to reinvent the wheel. If they had wanted a cheapened supply for AOS, I think we would already be seeing the "new, improved..." coming from their corporate AOS website. It could happen but until then, I am not panicking. I will stock up on a few AOS shave soap refills but refuse to go nuts about it. So there.
