Sonic Boom! Discovery

A few minutes ago there were this two loud booms in quick succession that shook my apartment and scared the stuff out me.... At first I thought it was an earthquake, but the news just said it was the Discovery...

Anyone else hear/feel it?

Thats very cool, :thumbup1:

Once I saw the space shuttle in its flight path fly over Vancouver as it was chasing the Space Station in order to dock with it at some point. It looked like a shooting star, it was so fast.

Quick !! secure your aftershaves :w00t:

I've seen the space shuttle flare up in the night sky as it slowed down in the atmosphere.

I am glad they are all home safe. One of the astronauts comes from the city I live in.

On the NASA website there is a tool that will tell you when the space station and the space shuttle if applicable will be able to be seen at night in your area. A year or so ago my the power was out in my on my street. thans to a racoon. Some of ue were talking that with the new solar array on the space station it was supposed to be visible at night and we were wondering if we could see it. I did some looking on "the google" and found the page. It is pretty neat to see one or the other fly over at night. A couple of times I have seen both with one chasing the other a few inches behind.

Here is the link.

I just realized that I have never seen it in the night's sky. So it looks like a shooting star? that's cool. Makes sense though. When it comes in is traveling at 25x the speed of sound.

It was supposed to land in Florida, but had to be diverted to Edwards here in SoCal due to bad weather. I've heard sonic booms before, but tonight's was especially loud and it totally took me by surprise.

Thanks for the link airplanedoc.

good thing you weren't doing an ATG pass on the neck with a straight at that particular moment...:w00t::biggrin:

makes one wonder if there IS any mishaps with those hearing of loud bangs in the skies, knowing of all the unrest in the world today..

I gotta admit that for just a second the thought did cross my mind.

If it is a clear night and you can get far enough from city lights to see a bunch of stars. It will be the brightest thing in the sky after the moon, and it moves pretty fast. Just follow the sighting guide, and it will appear out of nowhere, streak across the sky and then just disappear
