Slant razor help! 37C/G or 39C

So the title says it. I'm looking in to my first merkur from my Parker 60R which just isn't giving me the BBS shave that all these merkur fanatics keep speaking up about.

I want to grab myself a slant but am unsure as which to get. So far, this is what i'm looking at:

http://www.westcoastshaving.com/Merkur-37G-HD-Slant-Safety-Razor-Gold_p_173.html

Now from what I understand, the 39C is more aggressive, but given I know this, the reason i'm coming here today is because I enjoy the novelty of certain products over others, in this case the Gold version of the 37. I'm split between the two. Quality over novelty. Is the 39 worth the sacrifice in my case? Or is it not such a significant difference that I can get the best of both worlds with the 37G?

Thanks in advance!

I have used a slant Merkur razor for over 30 years. Nothing, including modern razors, can match the Merkur razor for a shave.:thumbup1::001_rolle

I own a 39c and it is my favorite DE of all time. It has always given me a superb, irritation-free shave. Paired with a feather it is unbeatable in my opinion. The added weight of the long handle just helps the razor mow down stubble even easier. I'm sure you will enjoy either that you get, however. Keep us posted

39 is a gimmick in my opinion. You can get all the slantness you need put of the 37.

I haven't used the 37, but the weight feels just perfect on my 39c. It makes it very easy to use no pressure, as the weight itself is just right.

Maybe it would be different if your beard is softer/harder...

I've been DE shaving and using a C38. I just got a 39C slant and gave it a spin, well, carefully controlled set of strokes.

Got out the new TH Rooney I large, some CF Lime (which I'm still getting the hang of when building up lather and gave the Devil a ride across my face. I had a 4 day growth.

Prep consisted of hot water splash and some preshave oil (actually dropped some grapeseed oil in the sink with the hot water, experimental), and I did a 4 pass shave to get BBS.

Once small nick on the chin, otherwise nice. It was aggressive and I do like to use a bit of pressure in some spots. Otherwise, the 39C is a nice addition. I will have to go back and forth a few times to really know if it works better than the 38C. Oh the blade was a Gilette 7 O'clock.

Thanks for everyone that replied! I'm placing my order for my 37G. I'm getting my gold and my slant on

You wont regret it. I got mine slant month ago and it was "shaveolution". If you don't get perfect shave for first time don't be discouraged. My first shaves weren't so good even I can say I have decent technique after one year of DE shaving. For first shaves I've put in Derby and Merkur and it wasn't pleasureable at all. Then I said "what the hell" and put in Feataher. Since then I use it every day and constantly get BBS in 2 passes without irritation, bumps, redness etc... just soft smooth skin.

Cheers
