What's new

New razors for a new year: Two new Yaqis (likely 34C and 37C clones)

I only ordered the SuperSlant razor head.. I know adding a handle is only a few dollars more, but I'll be using a Ti handle on it.... and I'll switch out the Yaqi Slant 37 stainless handle too.....
I think I will get the Planr/Planar Ti handle from DSCosmetic for it, or maybe another Thor, but that would be boring.

SuperSlant vs Slant 37 will be interesting. They shave differently yet both give great results.

I went round and round with the SuperSlant... .I've had the L2+, L2++ and the L1++OC. I loved the way the teeth on the OC are.. nicely rounded... You never feel them.... but the L1OC, as I said... was just under the efficiency I require, so it didn't make the cut... I think those stepped down base plates change something, as you noted above... The OC give me nice blade feel... but nothing outrageous.. At least, in my opinion.

I loved the way the Merkur 37C shaved... along with the ATT S1... but both of them gave me 8 hour shaves... not quite there. I routinely get 12 hour shaves from all the razors that hang around here.

It's not just mild, is very efficient. My cheeks felt quite some alcoholic sting.

Hmmm, that gives me pause about the Yaqi slant. I'm only looking for the magic I can get from the Athena - very efficient, yet mild enough that I get no feedback at all from alcohol after the shave. There are only a few razors that I can get that with, and even those I can't do every time. My goal is to get to the point where I can get that nearly every shave with my top few razors.

That's been my goal.... To pick up any razor I have out and available and get 12 hour shaves. I'm getting there. If the Yaqi Slant 37 works for me as I think it will, based on @Iridian 's experience, it will fill an itch I've had since I passed on the ATT S1 and put the Merkur 37C in storage.... We'll see if I get 12 hour smooth and comfortable shaves... I sure hope so... I'll report back here after a shave or two when it arrived in 3 weeks or so.

you are slowly starting to appreciate it.
Apologies for the late reply, I wanted to log on a handful of shaves before I commented.

I also wanted to wait because I had one very bad shave, with a Permasharp on shave 5. I cut myself up pretty badly, just below my pointy jaw line left and right side of my face.

Put in a milder blade this morning (Gillette Wilkinson Sword) and it felt much better.

I don't know how I managed to cut myself so badly, but I wager it's a combination of the beefy-slanted head and my skinny, sharp angled face and some excess pressure.

In any case, this mornings shave was very very good. But again, a little stubble had gone unharmed after the third pass. Needed the extra cleanup pass.
For a carefree, good shave I would probably still rather grab my Gillette Tech, Yaqi Ghost .90 or my Stat Cadet - they wont bite even with downward applied pressure.

Did put the handle with a red tip on my Gillette FB new to create some sort of Red Tip Gillette.
They worked great together.

@Iridian

Have you tried Fatip Slant? If yes how would you compare with this slant from Yaqi?
Similar aggression, can't really say which one is a bit more or less. I get a better, more efficient shave out of the Slant 37 than of either Merkur 39 (I have the long handle version, it's a 37 with a longer handle) or the Lo Storto/FOCS, though.
I still don't get it how these slants got rated as aggressive, they aren't.

I haven't tried one yet but maybe it needs a bit of habit adjustment to the slant design. During this phase maybe people found them aggressive and gave up?!
The danger of trying to level out/make the slanted head "straight" could indeed cause cuts. The stiffened blade and the angle making cutting hair on the other hand super smooth. The danger of the Wunderbar for me was that I barely felt it at all. I even cut away a slab of skin on my chin with it, only felt it a bit later when looking there. The Superslant and the other slants mentioned here give a more direct feedback, though. I would still have liked a bit more exposure on the Slant 37, but that's just my usual preference for a bit more aggression and efficiency.

I have the SuperSlant which is now my go-to razor in the L2++ configuration. It absolutely perfect. Even crappy blades do well in the SuperSlant. I will be selling all my other contemporary razors soon (keeping the collectors though).

Thank you for your detailed review!
I've just received the Yaqi 37c clone, but I can't find pictures of the Yaqi 34c clone. Do you have any pictures of it?
Yes and no, because the 34c clone turned out to be rather a copy of a "Barbasol Floating Head" razor that was not known to me.

The "Floating Head" is still available, but I cannot say anything about its characteristics, sorry.

I've used the Yaqi Floating razor for a few shaves and I can comment that it's actually a fairly aggressive razor. That's not so surprising since the Barbasol Floating Head razor it's been modeled after is supposed to be a rather aggressive razor, as well. The Yaqi Floating razor reminds me a lot of the Yaqi Harlequin in terms of blade feel characteristics, but the Floating is slightly less aggressive than the Harlequin. Subjectively, I'd say the floating is about 80 percent of the Harlequin in terms of aggressiveness. But the two razors actually feel fairly similar.

My 37 Slant showed up yesterday. I loaded it up with a Wizamet instead of a Perma-Sharp just to check out the efficiency. The Wizamets are a bit less sharp, but still sharp enough, usually.... and smooth.

The L2++ was too much for me.... 15 hour shaves but my face took a bit of a beating getting there.... I just received my last try with the SuperSlant... .I got it a few days ago: the L2++OC... It worked perfectly for me... 12 hour shaves with zero irritation.... I think I had problems with the double step-down base plate L2++.. The L2++OC is supposed to be a small step up in efficiency, but for me, it was easier to use and doesn't shave as deep as the L2++.

I'm relieved, as I love the SuperSlant design and really did want one of the base plates to work for me.... I'm using the L2OC with a Timeless Ti Crown handle and even with the heavier razor head, it is balanced well for me. This one is a keeper for me. Whew.
