Shaving with a straight is not THAT hard...

Hello gents,

I hope you guys are having a fine day. Yesterday I accomplished my second shave with my Parker Shavette SR1 straight disposable razor...and I must say, I truly love shaving with a straight.

I started wet shaving with a safety razor (DE89) in March and since then I got pretty good at it...I really wanted to try a straight, even though I hadn't fully mastered the safety razor, so I bought the Parker and just went for it...

First shave, I must say, was pretty difficult, especially with my left hand...it did result in one cut, but it was my first cut since I started wet shaving and I feel it was well deserved :)

Anyways, I went for my second shave with the Parker yesterday, WTG WTG and XTG....and it was great...everything went smooth...no nicks, cuts, or weepers...no irritation...a really decent shave....

I wanted to post this to anyone that is considering the Parker shavette, or anyone considering straight shaving altogether and is apprehensive because of all the horror stories they might hear or read...Try it out! I highly recommend it! It's really fun and it definitely allowed me to have my first connection with the past...it doesn't get more "Old School" than this (I'm 25 so all I've known is Mach XXXs) but it's something I would like to pass down to my children someday...if they're interested...

So, for what it's worth, a good shave is possible early on with a straight...just read up on technique, watch the youtube videos, be very careful, take your time, and enjoy it :)

Thanks for taking the time to read this guys.

Have a great shave and have a great day!

I think that anyone who think they might enjoy shaving with a straight razor should try it. They should not, however, expect the best shave of their lives right away. Those things take time.

great feedback. This is the exact razor I have on my wishlist. affordable and uses de blades. I have to watch some videos to see how you guys wield that thing.

It took me awhile to get decent shaves, but even at its worse I think I only had to deal with a few days or so of REALLY lousy shaves :). Everyone is different, but half the fun for me was the learning process.

Very good. A real straight is even better.

Yes, that's what I hear. One of these days I'll make the plunge. I just worry about the price of the tools needed to hone, strop, etc. and the razor itself... But I know it'll happen eventually...and I'll probably enjoy it more.

Yeah, maybe I should've clarified...I haven't gotten the best shaves yet...but it hasn't been anything less than a great experience so far...the great shaves will come in the future, but I'm definitely enjoying the present. Thanks :)

I use an R41 DE razor. Very aggressive and long lasting shaves. My question is would shaves with a straight razor be even more close and longer lasting than the R41 or is it about the same? Only the experience being better with a straight compared to the R41?

Congrats on the shave, and don't fall for that old line that the Parker is not a real straight razor. Parker makes a very nice straight razor that you shave with the same as you would any straight razor. The only difference is that the blade is disposable, and remember that a regular straight and a disposable blade straight are both open bladed razors.

If you don't hone it and strop it yourself, it's not a straight razor. :biggrin1:
