Shaving Stick Holder

Just disassembled a Scotch glue stick to find a "spike" going up the tube after I pulled out the glue and the glue's base. Don't understand the design, and sort of gave up. Went to WCS site to look at Letterk's shaving stick holder, and see that he says his has a "spike" going up the center, such that one would have to make a hole in the soap to get it to work correctly (I guess). I really do not understand how these two stick holders work! Doesn't look like the "spike" thing does anything more than rotate the base of the stick to make it rise and fall. But does the "spike" go all the way up, such that on about the second good face lathering you have a piece of plastic stick poking your face? Would really look a description of how this works! Thanks!!

The spike will not interfere with face lathering, as you mentioned it is designed to move the stick up and down. When you are face lathering you would rotate the stick up and out of the holder, the spike stays in the holder and does not come up with the soap.

The "spike" is threaded like a screw.
The base is threaded internally.
The "spike" is attached to a knob on the bottom.

When you rotate the knob, it rotates the spike, which causes the base to rise.
The "spike" does not change position.

Thanks, Tom! Believe I will tear into this glue stick again to see if I can turn it into a useable soap stick. Probably would be easier to get one from WCS, but I already have the glue stick. Now that I know how it works, figure it is worth a try!

Thanks again, guys! Just got the glue out, which was a lot easier than I thought. Tomorrow, after the tube has tried, going to grate some Klar Kabinett and make a stick!!

Not sure about melting Klar Kabinett. Appreciate the chopstick idea

You can't really melt Klar Kabinett, but you can soften it a bit by microwaving for 5 second bursts (no more!) a couple of times once you have cut off some 1/4 inch thick chunks from the bar. You just want it somewhat warm. I tried melting it and it was no good - ugly in fact. If you grate it, it should be OK without warming at all. It's softer than you think.

As for making your shave stick, you run the little pusher in the tube up to about 1/2 an inch from the top, then squash in some soap with your thumb until it's full. Lower the pusher another 1/2 inch and repeat. This helps keep air pockets from forming, and it's easy to do. You will love KK as a stick for face lathering, although you may want to use an old deodorant container for larger surface area. The deodorants for ladies are a good size, not too big, not too small. A good dollar store item if you can' snag one from SWMBO.

We look forward to your report!:001_tt1:

The deed is done! But to what effect, I am not sure. At the moment the stick is "curing". Cut off a slab, grated it, tamped it in with a chopstick, soaked it briefly in hot water (not sure why), and checked it only briefly. It comes up, but doesn't look like it will twist back down - perhaps over tomped! Some positive developments: (1) found my rotary cheese grater after it had gone missing for about ten years, (2) managed to kill an hour this morning, (3) have now gained practical experience in stick making. Lesson learned: far simpler to just cut a piece of Klar from the bar, put it in a ziplock and use the piece as a shave stick.
