Shaving in the Dark...

Living here on the East Coast of the US, last Friday evening we experienced a sudden storm front with 100mph (160kph) winds. The storm covered several states, but the DC area, Virginia, and Maryland took the brunt of the storm which knocked out power to several million customers. No lights. No air conditioning. (...and no refrigeration, no electric stove or microwave)

Our electrical service was restored just a couple of hours ago. Loss of power made life somewhat uncomfortable with temperatures near or above 100F (~39C), and with the humidity, the 'heat index' was approximately 114f (45C). It was pretty miserable --I guess we've become dependent on A/C.

Yesterday, with three days growth of beard, I went ahead and shaved using cool water. I used an Astra SP with three shaves on it in a Gillette Sheraton, a Kent BK8, Proraso Pre-shave, and a 10oz Ramekin filled with Saint Charles Shave 'Cool Citrus' shave soap. The window in my bath admitted a fair amount of light, but is positioned so that about all I could see in the mirror was my silhouette.

The most challenging task was face lathering the soap, but I actually managed to build a pretty good lather. Shaving was strictly by touch and went surprisingly well. Rinse and swipe Alum bar over face, and second rinse. DFS+. This isn't something I'd want to do very often, but overall, it went well.

I suspect that there are other B&B'ers from the mid-Atlantic states that are currently absent, as some won't have their service restored for a week or so. It'll be interesting to see what stories they have.

I think it would be easy to shave with a DE in the dark. I do essentially that while on camping trips - no mirror, cold water and all. There was a post here a week or two ago - had a movie of a guy shaving with a straight while blindfolded. I've used a straight and the outside mirror of my truck but that was as close as I got - and probably as close as I want to get.

A few years back, when New York City lost it's power for a day or so, I shaved using a LED headlamp and a little cold water. It sufficed, but I would not want to do it every day.

If it's dark, who would know that you haven't shaven? Alternately, you could shave outdoors with a mirror like soldiers do.

I’m stumped
I would have shaved by candle light. Guess this is how the working man would have done it back in the day.

We're still w/o power 5 days later. I've been cold water shaving (electric hot water @ our house) in the evenings while it's still light. In the morning I just splash on a fair bit of a menthol A/S to cool down before heading out to work.

We're supposed to get power back by the end of the weekend. I've already claimed the 1st hot shower and then a long shave.

My folks live in Germantown, MD and were also without power until yesterday morning. Here in the Philly area, I was lucky not to lose power and only had to clean up a boatload of small branches that the trees gave up in the storm. Not far away in South Jersey, they got absolutely creamed. Makes me fear what would happen should they get a direct hit from a hurricane.

As for modern America being dependent upon air conditioning, I know I am personally. I know they didn't know any different, but how did they survive back in the day with woolen clothes and no fans, A/C, etc...? I think people were generally a lot tougher back then!

I got hit as well (just got power back yesterday early afternoon, very hard since my wife is pregnant and due soon), and had my first true cold water shave on Monday. Fortunately my bathroom has a skylight and two decent sized windows, so no shaving in the dark for me. Cold water shave was pretty good.

Congrats on the success despite less-than-ideal conditions.

When I first started I needed the sound more than almost anything, and if my wife fired up the hairdryer I went to the other bathroom to shave. Now I can stay right there and shave away, using a sense of feel when the sound is not available.

Glad the power's back on for you, John, and that all's well. Y'all definitely got hit harder there than we did in SW VA, and SW VA got hit with once-in-a-generation damage. Hang in there!
