Naniwa 12k is great. I use mine from time to time. Once you do the pasted balsa progression and lap the .1u after each shave, you won’t be going back to the bench any more.

No, these are as flat as glass. I have a table saw that I could use to split.Flatness could be a concern and size definitely would be. I have to stick mine in a drawer with other items.

Perfect flatness of the substrate isn’t critical. Flatness of the balsa is. After you glue the balsa to the substrate you lap the balsa flat and make sure it is dead flat using pencil marks. When the marks are sanded off, it is flat and you are good to go.Well there you go.
