What's new

Shave from hell!

To, had a hot shower, got out, quick body dry, then hot water in the sink, on the face. Pre treat with Proasso, whipped up a lather of Castle Forbes Cedar and Sandlewood, brushed and started to, um, not shave! What the heck, tried three straights! Finally grabbed the Mach III, was like trying to cut the lawn with a hockey stick! Blades were sharp, new, I don't get it! What phase is the moon in?!

Hmm, maybe you underwent some sort of experiment involving adamantium bonding like wolverine.. except with your beard..?

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'm certain someone else will post some real answers soon:blush:

Production, a TI full hollow Canadian, a vintage Polish army half hollow, and a vintage Sheffield near wedge (my goto). Then a brand new cartridge for the Mach III, wouldn't come clean! Not an hour ago, and I can already feel stubble! Not a happy camper! I know the metal dust in my beard causes issues to a point when I shave in the shower after being in the shop, but I have been sick all week, and only attempted a couple brushes... I almost went for an axe!

My face isn't razor burnt, no irritation to speak of, the hair just didn't want to let go!

That is odd. Maybe your lather was too thick? I know that if it's too thick and slick the razor could just glide over the stubble. You could test the razors with a little bit of cream on your arm to see if it's even cutting hair.

The razors were supposed to be shave ready. I stropped them with green CRo2 on balsa, then leather strop. I bought them (except the TI) from acquaintances from a couple different forums (knife forums) who straight shave, and honed them before sending to me. They seemed sharp when I got them, but they wouldn't cut hanging hair. So maybe I got them close, but not quite there. Now the Mach III was a new blade, right outta the box. It did the job, but I bloody near had to gnaw the stubble off! The lather was thick and slick for sure. Maybe water it down some?

Definitely try adding a little more water, especially with straights. It can make the difference between cutting or gliding over.

Do you have another shaving soap to experiment with? I would rub a little cream on the top of your hand and try shaving a bit of hair off with your straight razor. How is it cutting? Also, what is the grit of your CrO2? Sounds like this was a lather issue to me though.
