Saving coticule slurry

I recently purchased a couple of vintage Coticules that both the Coticule and BBWs are dished. They are probably a 1/8 to a 1/4 inch from flat.

I was going to lap them flat as there is plenty meat left on them. I was want to save the slurry to fill a joint on a re-glued Coticule and use when honing, as opposed to raising slurry. I am planning to lap with a 325 DMT over a plastic Tupperware container and let the slurry dry naturally. My questions;

1. is there a better way collect and save the slurry?

2. Should I keep the Slurries separate or would it be ok to mix the slurries keeping the Coticule and BBW slurries separate?

3. any rehydrating tips?

There is an interesting video on Coticule.Be of a guy who saves his slurry on the sides of the stone and what appears to be a Microfiber cloth upon which he hones. I would be concerned about mold as Microfiber gets funky after being wet.

Yes You should keep the BBW and coticule slurry seperate, it would be like mixing 4k and 8k slurry together which is very inconsistent.

Why do you want to keep it, get a small slurry stone and use that. The slurry stone also helps to flatten out the stone.

You can also use the Pacocot method where slurry is not used at all. You can go form a bevel setter to shave ready without slurry.

I thought Paco was crazy, and he might be, but is was 100% accurate on this method. I have tried it and it works.

It's fine to mix the slurries. Despite some grit ratings that, a few years ago, Ardennes dubiously gave for coticule and BBW hones to relate these hones to the very common Norton 4000/8000 combination hone that woodworkers are usually familiar with, the grit ratings did not have any relation to actual testing. Further experimentation has shown that there is no statistically significant difference in the keenness produced by these two rocks (including a proper report that's on coticule.be, complete with analysis completed by a professional statistician), so I wouldn't worry about mixing them.

It might help if you posted pictures of your hones. The dishing may be okay to leave in certain cases.

I thought about this for a while. I bought a large coticule second hand, and it needed quite a lapping to get flat. When I did it I used sandpaper on glass, and then let the slurry dry and saved it to use for pasting strops. In the end I did not do it, because I thought the residual particles from the paper would contaminate the slurry. But if you used a DMT to lap I see no issues with using it.

And yeah, just mix the BBW and coti slurry together. I dont see that causing an issue.

I separate mine and store them right beside the jars of belly button lint.................. :laugh:

It also matters what you store them in. I have developed a container that will not further contaminate the slurry. Accept no substitutes!!!

Seriously, is this for real?

Well if you want to use it to fill in a crack or something that would work great. As far as using it for honing, don't, just get you a slurry stone and raise a slurry on your stone with it.

I keep some under my pillow to keep monsters away and bring me good fortune. Pixie dust...errr...coticule slurry is potent stuff. Use it wisely. Now, if you were to create slurry on a coticule with a Nagura, you'll unleash a thousand demons. Please, do NOT do this.
