Rusty blades (with pic)

My Wilkinson blades usually start to rust a little after 4 days or so. They don't rust on the cutting edge though, so I keep using them. I live in The Netherlands, for those who think climate is involved.

hmm try this:

also here's a link with info on it:

i haven't tried it, but have heard of it. It claims to increase the life of your blade 20x. I doubt that, but it'll probably still make a difference. I'd say oxidation is probably your problem, not the water, which is what the Edgesaver is for. You might want to look here and see if anyone's reviewed it. yeah, definitely don't shave with that. It's not worth you getting some disease from using a rusty blade.

There are also other blade oils that essentially do the same thing, although again I cannot vouch for any of them.

With how cheap DE blades are, I can't really see the need for such a device. I've seen 100 pack of Israeli Personnas on ebay for less than $4.

I've seen this discussed before--but after a few days sitting in my bathroom, my blades tend to get rusty/corroded. I live in West Los Angeles and use the DWP water to shave with--don't know if it's particularly hard--and the climate is for the most part dry.

This Feather, my favorite brand, is a week old & corroded quicker than my Derbys, Personnas, etc. It doesn't appear to be anything that comes off with cleaning...any ideas? Is it the various coatings used by different manufacturers?

Thanks....

Well Burma Shaver.. Fine kettle of fish you've gotten us into here. What sort of razor are you using? Has it too become rust stained? Are there any irregularities on the interior of your razor(s)?
Do you use a single razor for a continuous period? Daily, every other day, weekly?
This is a troubling situation.. I recall a friend whose home used well water that was loaded with sulfur having a similar problem. His well water was so sulphorous as to be undrinkable..

First things first, the water should be taken out of the equation. Lee Valley Tools in Canada is one of my favorite suppliers for my primary AD woodworking tools. Many of them are made of high carbon steel and will rust at the drop of a small hat. Most woodworking tool suppliers will also have silica gel packs of one kind or another. The small one from Lee Valley can easily be restored to full operation by baking at 300 degree oven for 3 hours.

Disclaimer, my relationship with Lee Valley is that of satisfied customer - I receive no compensation for steering business to them. The small one should be adequate for the average medicine chest.

my opinion, keep a small bag of silica gel where you store your blades, and wipe the blade dry with a piece of toilet paper after every shave,

or stop using feathers and get something with a thicker or more resistant coating,

if you dont know what silica gel is, sometimes when you buy a coat, pants or a pair of shoes, you get this little tissue bag with small beads inside, thats silica gel, its a "plastic" compound that absorbs humidity, you know its absorbed enough when it accuires a gelatine like texture,

Looks a LOT like the derby I took out this morning. 3 days on the blade and it looked like that. Also, the inside of the razor was stained with rust looking spots. The razor cleaned up well.

Yeah... I don't drink our water and haven't for years. We have been using a 5 gallon cooler since we moved to this town 12 years ago.

Perhaps you should try different blades!

If you still get the same problem then it is something else and not the blades.

Derbys are to my best knowledge are not that great... perhaps they will do the same.

Good Luck!
