Root canals

About 6 weeks ago I had a back tooth prepared for a crown and then had it installed. The prep was deep, any temperature change or even just sitting reading and the tooth was hell for almost a month. I had a root canal a couple days ago - no pain! Brilliant idea - the tooth hurts, so take out the nerve, the tooth still works just as well and I can enjoy eating, breathing, even reading without constant pain. I nominate the inventor of the root canal for a Nobel prize in medicine!

For one of my root canals, my dentists asked if I needed novacaine. I thought she was joking, and said no. But she went ahead without it. She said she'll never do that to me again. Not that it hurt or anything, but I looked so scared. I confessed that all the time I was thinking about Dustin Hoffman in the dentist's chair.

well i dunno if i agree completely on that one. i had 3 done at once, the process took over a week total with pretty annoying pain for that time. the kicker was none of those teeth ever hurt to begin with, they did x-rays for the first time in like 3-4 years and said i had to have root canals :mad3:. they of course do not hurt now but knowing they will not last nearly as long as my other teeth is a bit depressing (was told at the time expect 15-25 years), at the time i was 18.

i have no doubt i would rather loose them in 25 years than say the one to two years though. so here is to hoping they outlast their speculated life time and serve me till i am no longer in need of them :thumbup1:.

Two years ago I had a root canal done on a front tooth. I had to get a tooth fixed that was broken during a wrestling match. I referee HS football and wrestling, and during the HWT championship match I was down on the mat looking for the fall when a roll through scramble happened. I took a foot to the mouth and having the whistle in my mouth I had a tooth break during the match. As we go out of bounds the coaches are freaking out with all the blood on my face. I get some paper towels and get cleaned up and finish the match. Get the tooth and root canal done a month later.

A year later I get what my dentist said was a gum boil. A boil up in my gumline, I have never seen my face ever swell up so much and be in so much pain. The old root canal gets knocked out so I have to have it redone and two more up front. I decided to get the fron teeth all redone at the smae time. $3000 later the whole front of my mouth is fixed. Never felt anything while it was being done. I actually fell asleep for a bit during the procedure.

Is it safe?

Good luck on that. I had most of my teeth knocked out when I was 19 or 20 and all the ones that had root canals are now starting to deteriorate. I'm 27. It wouldn't bother me if it was only one or two, but we're talking basically my entire mouth. :w00t:

 that is a real fear of mine as far as teeth go. 25 now (almost to 26 i suppose), i guess they are holding up well enough so far. would be inconvenient to loose them as they are all molars and they are all used a lot when i eat.

I've had one cavity my whole life. I've been to 4 dentists to fix it and they all screw up somehow. I finally had a root canal and that quack drilled into my mouth without novacaine. It still hurts like a b- and it's been 3 years since he "fixed" it. I really have a low opinion of dentists now.

I'm glad it hear it worked for you, I hope it holds up in the long run.

I've declined the Novocain for a root canal when the tooth is already dead. And if a cavity is not deep. . . I hate drooling for no reason. . .

That being said I wish they could give me a morphine drip for when I have my teeth cleaned. . . lady stands on my chest and lowers a golf club spurting high pressured water into some place my body is certain it should not be. . . all the while shining lights brighter than what any space alien craft should have directly into my eyes . . . and what is up with these 1 hour appointments . . . sheesh. . .
