It’s called pinning. Usually done with brass or silver rod . Ivory is quite durable and lends itself to carving. Here are some I’ve done with scrimshaw. I also did the spine work.

@cc21, Not sure, but you may need to post a certain number of messages in order to use the private message feature. Two ways:
