Razorpit Shaving Foam

Hey BandB!

I've been trying to get some reviews on the Razorpit Shaving Foam, but because my "source" says that the product is fairly new to Canada, I can't seem to find reviews. My main concern is that the ingredients list:

"aqua (water), alcohol denat., coco-glucoside, glycerin, polyquaternium-7, chlorhexidine digluconate, lactic acid, hydroxyethylcellulose",

indicates that it contains alcohol denat as the second ingredient, yet this shaving foam is supposedly "ideal for sensitive skin". The reason I bought it was because my "source" told me that it worked great for him as a sort of pre-shave lubricant to go under shaving cream. Because I've been getting some irritation around my lower neck (going wtg) he suggested that I first apply this shaving foam, then apply my lather (jack black supreme cream triple cushion) because the Razorpit foam would add extra glycerin and help give a smoother glide. I will admit, what sold me on buying this product was that it is so slippery when applied that I have no doubt it would give additional glide. My concern however is two fold: considering alcohol denat is the second ingredient, would that not dry out my already sensitive skin? Additionally, by applying a layer of this stuff underneath my actual shave cream, would it not prevent my shave cream, and all of its quality oils and moisturizers, from reaching my skin?

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to B&B!

No two people seem to be sensitive to exactly the same things. So the only way to find out is to try it. Or you might do just as well with a gentle facial soap, as a pre-shave, like step 2 below:

My own take on any kind of pre-shave is that it is basically a way to trick yourself into spending more time on prep. The important thing is that your prep meets certain minimum standards, and has enough time to soak into your skin and hair for the shave. I do this by face-lathering for five full minutes, and I time myself to make sure I do not skimp.

Thanks mblakele! So I guess if soap can be left on the face and the shaving cream will still do it's thing, the razor pit foam should be okay... And of course I agree that two people will respond differently, but I guess another way of phrasing my question is wouldn't it be counterintuitive to add a shaving foam with alcohol to my face when I'm trying to keep it as hydrated as possible, particularly when shaving?
I will try it out, however, and let you guys know the result. If it's too drying when I use it as an underlayer, I'm going to try mixing it in with my jack black lather, hopefully aiding thelather by adding the additional glycerine.

Just an update: At this point, i wouldn't be recommending the razorpit shave foam, at least not for sensitive skin. I had a bad case of irritation last night and got some really nasty razor bumps in an area that I normally don't get them. However, this was when I applied the product to my Jack Black lather, as opposed to using razorpit as an under-layer (I was having trouble building up a lather, which some of you may know from another post of mine) and thought the shaving foam would help me get a better lather. It also made the corner of my lips red and stingy which is strange - although this may have been the Jack Black as I have only used it three times, although the first two times this never happened.
But, with all that said, it was also my first time trying out an Astra superior, which may have amplified the irritation (I'm used to Derbys)

If you suspect that you might be sensitive to a product, try a patch test. Just dab a little on the skin of your inner arm. If that causes irritation, you are sensitive to something in the product. If not... well, it sounds like you might have some scraped-up skin, and that is always more prone to irritation. Heal up and try again.

Have you thought about using other products? I see mentions of Jack Black here and there, but I do not know how well it performs. I have never heard of the razorpit foam before this thread. If you want to try something a little more popular here, and want to avoid potential irritants, look into Kiss My Face unscented shaving cream. In the USA many health food stores carry it, and the Whole Foods chain. I think Whole Foods is in Canada too, and Canada_Nationwide_Various_Locations_Shaving_Supplies shows a few options.

Thanks for the suggestions! It could very well be that I'm not sensitive to the product, and simply that I was reacting to my skin that already was suffering from some previous razor irritation (I was having such a great shave first time I used Jack Black, that I decided to try atg -worst mistake ever!.. and I never let that heal before my shave).
I'm going to try out the Jack Black a few more times, after I'm all healed up - because I do think it may turn out to be just the cream I'm looking for. But if I do get the unfortunate irritation again, I will look into KMF - I've heard good things about it! Plus, they sell it at my work (Organic Grocery Store), so it would be easy for me to pick up.
Thanks again mblakele!
