What's new

Razorock S. Maria

I have been fortunate of late to have some wonderful new (at least to me) soaps and creams. Some of them beckon the question, "where's da' love?" Razorock's S. Maria is one of those. This purported clone of Santa Maria Novella is one of the best creams I have tried of late. Although I have never tried the original SMN I can attest to S. Maria being in a class close to that of Simpson's Luxury Shaving Cream, having a very similar consistency. It is a harder or denser cream compared to most traditional creams; you can't just dip the brush, you have to also give a twist of the wrist with a little pressure to get sufficient product on the brush. The scent is a clean foresty eucalyptus scent, I imagine similar to original SMN.

I like to begin lathering with a well-squeezed out brush to "pre-lather" my face. Then with a few drops of hot water added to the brush little by little, a thick creamy lather develops. I shaved with a Red Tip and a Rapira Swedish Supersteel blade (its fourth shave), and without exaggeration, the blade performed like my first with it (I keep notes b/c I like comparing blades). The first pass was effortless in that it was slick and smooth-no tugging. The second pass around the goatee region felt like the blade was missing from the razor. ATG on the neck was smooth but probably could have been a bit closer (I think this is more the blade showing diminished properties, than the performance of the cream or razor). I felt a brief and significant (but not terrible) aftershave sting.

In conclusion, I have but one heartfelt question: "wherez da' friggin' love" for this outstanding product? I hope others will try it and post their thoughts, especially if they have also tried the original SMN-I would like to see a comparison, although I will not spend $65 for the honor.

Thanks for listening.

I have never tried the original SMN but am a huge fan of the RRSM, in fact I used it this morning with excellent results. I love the lather, the scent and the way my face feels after. This will be one product that remains a part of my rotation as long as it is available.

Amen to that. Thanks for your input. You should also try the R-160.

Razorock S. Maria is awesome stuff, no doubt. I think the reason it gets no love as of yet is due to what I call "product fatigue syndrom (PFS)".

You see, our buddy Joe from Italian Barber kind went through a manic phase this summer...he launched no less than 20 or so brand new soaps/creams/balms. He kind of flooded the market with product...all of which was amazing! No small feat!

But, the thing is, if you are a RR fan like me, you bought a good size sampling of his products. I know my shelves are happily stacked with RR. But, it takes TIME to get through that much stuff...to really develop a feel for a product, discover how good it really is, shave with it multiple times over weeks. Only after this requisite period is when true product love develops and glowing reviews get written by most folks. That's my theory anyway. I mean, imagine if Truefitt & Hill launched all their products at once? You'd be overwhelmed! Also, Musgo's new line! Seen much written about it? I thought not! 5 or so new creams and 3 or so new colognes is a lot!

To wit, people are still freaked out about XXX, and that was launched at least 2 years ago. I just think Joe launched so much product, people can't keep up. Wait another year, and people will finally start realizing how good RR Mudder Foker is, for example.

So, product fatigue syndrome. Like a kid in a candy store, when surrounded by this much good stuff, it takes a while to figure out what you really like!!!!! And Joe launched a shaving bazooka at us!!!

Isn't that the truth?! In the last 4 months, I've purchased 10 new soaps from Joe. I thought things were going to cool down after the La Famiglia line was launched. Initially, I was going to settle on maybe 1 or 2 RR soaps as part of my rotation. But because they were so inexpensive, I now have one year supply that I have to get through.

I agree with your assessment of Mudder Focker. Absolutely one of the best soaps I've tried. I purchased 3 backups.

And Joe launched a shaving bazooka at us!!!

Is this product similar or the Classic or Fresco "shaving cream soaps", or is it more like the Artisan soaps?

Here we go again, thanks to this thread I just placed an order for this cream (it also helped that it is half price this weekend). :biggrin1:

This AD is now completely out of control. :scared:

i bought it too because of the sale...and of course had to spend $60 to get free shipping since its all about saving money

Yet I've read articles here that hey have nothing to do with each other! I wonder which is correct??

I owned both at the same time. They were identical. I used to include a sample of each occasionally with a BST sale. No one ever was able to distinguish between them.

I hear there is/was an Acqua di Parma tube though that contains an allegedly inferior cream than comes in the AdP tub. This may be the source of some of the confusion.
