Razor stand and shaving mug- also lather technique

I'm new to DE shaving.

I'm compiling an Xmas shopping list for my wife.

Currently I use an old metal camping bowl with an 'enamelware' interior.

It seems to work ok...lather is cold. Any problems with using this bowl ?

But I've read that porcelain shaving mugs are better. Why would that be ?

I also have a Muhle R 89 razor. Currently I gently lay the razor down on a shelf in my medicine cabinet.

I'm thinking of getting an acrylic stand that I can lay down the razor .

I don't know a lot about the details of DE shaving, so some of my questions probably seem naive.

What do you think ?

BTW, while I have your attention...what's better regarding using a shaving soap.

Wet the brush and swirl away at the soap in the puck ?

Or should I cut a thin sliver of soap...size of a walnut...out of the soap and swirl away..using just the moisture from the wet brush ?

You can use this bowl. If you want to have warm lather put the bowl filled with hot water in a larger bowl or sink filled with hot water. step is to do this with your brush to soak it for a few minutes. Then refill the bowls for the lather.

Porcelain bowls as well as bowls made with ceramic materials retain heat and keep the warmer. I used a larger Pyrex bowl filled with hot water and then placed a large coffee or soup mug in the Pyrex bowl to keep the lather warm.

You can find a review of acrylic stands made by a member (Ssilox) at http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=96054. I have two stands: one stand is for one brush and razor that I am currently using and the other holds three brushes and two razors that are in my current rotation. I like both.

Float your metal bowl in a bowl of very hot water. You will like it.

There's nothing like a scuttle for the winter. Check out Dirty Bird or Georgetown Pottery. Can't help with the soap question as I'm a cream user.

+1 to both

You may also want to check out Robert Becker's "Feats of Clay" store on ebay.

Relative to the soap, don't cut pieces off. Swirls your (shaken out) brush on it.

Cheers and happy shaving!
