Ram's Horn Scales

Now I know why TI sells these for $125...A lot of work and the horn does not yield a lot of usable product...or maybe that is my lack of skill.

This was a great learning experience, as I got to do some research on how horn was processed in the days of yore.

I'll post the method later....gotta go to church now.

Came out really beautiful and took a very high polish. Mappin & Webb "Nulli Secundus" blade.

Thanks guys, I sanded these in progression from 220 to 1500, then used the rubbing compound. These seem a lot more polished than the TI ones I have seen on line. I have never seen any in person.

More on the method later.

That is an awesome looking razor! I saw a handmade pocket knife with a ramhorn handle. I always thought it was beautiful.

The local Tandy Leather shop has cow horn, and I am tempted to try making a set, Just need to figure out how to flatten the sections, permanently.

But that rams horn is awesome!

Looking forward to your method, and see if it can help me out at all.

I'm curious to hear your method. What's especially nice is that you captured the beauty of inner horn, but some of the texture of exterior horn. Usually it's a trade-off, one or the other. Great work!

I've got a set of the TI scales, and they are quite different from yours, in that they have left a lot more of the rougher grain on the outside. (As a commercial business rather than a labour of love, I can see why they'd want to go that way rather than what is obviously a very lavour-intensive operation for you.)

Very nice!
