I have never been a fan of Boise State's (in)famous blue turf, and although the Broncos as a team has continued to impress over the years, I have purposely missed most of their televised home games because I just couldn't stand to watch that big blue field. Fortunately, none of the other colleges and universities saw fit to alter the sports universe. Until now...
Watching bits of ESPN's College Gameday this morning, being broadcast live from none other than the azure field of Boise State, I saw a short segment on the Eastern Washington University's newly installed gridiron turf in all it's shocking bright red glory. I am afraid the trend may be beginning.
I always figured this day would come--but with Boise State's out of sight, mostly out of mind location, the colored turf was a unique oddity that most folks knew about, but considered just a peculiarity that belonged to an out of the way college sports team. The fact that "personalized" playing turf is a phenomenon that may be starting to spread is not going to sit well with me. I realize I'm a bit of a relic and love traditionalism (still getting used to the designated hitter), but I can't be alone wanting my gridirons green.
