Questions about your routine

Hi all,

I just started on the forum, have my newbie "hi" and "hall of fame" posts, and now off to some questions.

I am new to wetshaving, for now using my Merkur 38C, Merkur blade that came with it and a canned foam, and I would like to hear from you about your routine:

- how often do you shave?
- do you prep?
- soap, cream, foam, stick?
- do you shave ATG?
- how often do you replace your blade?

Hi and welcome to B&B, I tend to shave daily following a shower as my prep, I prefer to use shaving soap and nearly always face lather with a badger brush. Yes, I shave against the grain but only after shaving WTG and XTG. How often I change blades depends on the brand, my usual Personna reds I change after 4 shaves, Feathers after 7 days and English Wilks when they start to tug. These are all personal preferences however, what works for me doesn't necessarily work for the next man. As with everything in wetshaving YMMV.

I have developed into a nightly shaver, my prep is a shower, I switch between cream and soap, no ATG for me (I get ingrowns) I replace the blade when I feel it start to get uncomfortable.

I shave daily
I shower before shaving, right before I'm done showering I blast the shower head on my face with water as hot as I can stand.
I started with creams but was quickly turned on to soaps. I find the lathers to be richer and provide a better layer of slickness for the razor to glide across.
I shave WTG and XTG every day, but Saturday and Sunday get ATG added.
I replace my blade every 4th shave.

- do you shave ATG? sometimes on the third pass to clean up

The 38C is a great razor. I used it for quite a while before moving on to some other razors.

Hot shower, rub some jajoba oil on my face, face lather with a badger brush using shaving soap. Three passes (WTG, XTG, ATG, touch up if needed). 90% of the time I use my Merkur Mergress (modified Progress) with a Gillette Silver Blue blade.

I end by rinsing my face with warm water, then cold water. Aftershave splash then sometimes a balm/moisturizer.

It it takes me about 15 minutes.

- how often do you shave? I shave every morning. When I shave at night it interferes with my sleep.
- do you prep? Yes, double time. Face wash with cleanser then pre shave gel or cream but not oil
- soap, cream, foam, stick? I like creams (face lather) exclusively. Love DR Harris (Arlington is nice, rather floral). Trying the Als shaving trial pack right now.
- do you shave ATG? No, WTG then XTG but maybe alittle diagonal
- how often do you replace your blade? Personna Blues are my fav, change every 3rd.

my routine sounds pretty similar to everyone else's. I shave in the morning. my brush (badger or boar) soaks while I shower (I use a kettle to heat the water first). I almost never use shave oil. I mostly face lather with soaps and a de (I bowl lather with creams on sunday). I finish with an aftershave and then apply cologne. shower through shave takes about 15 minutes on a work day, a little longer if i'm off. it's become something I look forward to every day!

I prefer to shave before showering, wash face with warm water followed by a warm towel
I use shaving soap.
Normally I make two passes WTG and touch up ATG
When it starts to tug usually about every three shaves
When I done shaving I rinse with cold water and apply balm

- do you prep? Shower while brush soaks in hot water, out of shower I smear some Pre Shave by Proraso across my beard. I love the smell and sensation
- soap, cream, foam, stick? Cream, lathered in cup
- do you shave ATG? For the 3rd pass, I tend to go in the direction from my mouth to my ear - slight upwards direction. Not sure if this is XTG or ATG
- how often do you replace your blade? Once per month.

I usually give my face a day or two rest between shaves. My prep is plenty of warm water. I use either soaps or creams (soaps more often). I do not shave ATG. I replace my blade roughly every four shaves.

do you prep? Shower and wash face with Glyce Lyme soap at the sink.
soap, cream, foam, stick? Yes, yes, rarely, yes. The soap gets a splash of water and sits in warm water in it's container in scuttle or sink. The brush soaks about 2/3 of the way to the handle, too.
do you shave ATG? WTG, XTG, touch ups ATG.
how often do you replace your blade? Once a week unless I get a dud. Astra SP.

- Every other day, sometimes every third day. Depending how busy work is (my job doesn't require me to be clean shaven)
- Only prep work i do, is soak the brush for a few minutes. I shave after showering, my face is ready to go.
- Soaps and creams
- Yes i do
- Depends on the blade. But i usually change it after the third shave.

- soap, cream, foam, stick? 80% of the time soaps, 20% creams although only 2 months ago those percentages were reversed
- do you shave ATG? yes, I go WTG, XTG and then finish with ATG
- how often do you replace your blade? whenever it starts to tug usually every 3-4 shaves, although today was shave 13 on an English Wilkinson

-I shave every night unless I have the next morning off
-My prep is: Hot cloth, wet face, proraso pre-shave
-Soap or cream depending on what I've bought.
-Only after I've shaved with and against the grain
-Depends on the blades I'm using, usually I use a blade for two shaves, turn it over and go for two more. It probably doesn't change the sharpness or anything, just a habit.
