What's new

Questions about razors I got today.

Okay so these are the 4 off of ebay

Shined up nice, I think it may be silver plated rather than nickel. No gillette stamped on it but there are patent #s on the handle and head. What is the type and prospects as a shaver?

This old type is stamped made in Canada. The plating on the top is a little funky a couple of places, but this looks like manufacturing defect. It looks to me like this was never used or even had a blade in it. All the other plating sparkled and I did not touch this one to clean it.

This new type is from a different auction. Not sure if it has been stripped of its gold plate or what, that is what I suspect. The only part that was bad was the base plate which has lost most of it's gold plating and the brass was tarnished. When I shined it the areas that still have gold became apparent.

I also got a decent auto-strop and a chipped straight razor, 3 brushes which I will post about in the correct forums. As for the other odds and ends, the tortoise shell things were toothbrush and comb cases (lol) and the mini razor had multiple new blades and a handle but no head as expected. Anyone who wants those mini razor parts could have them as a PIF (though I doubt anyone would)

Here is the most important question: Which order would you shave with these in?

Am I wrong, or is the bottom razor a Frankenrazor? Looks like a LC NEW baseplate, but the top plate looks like it came from a Tech.

It could be that the handle and the top plate go together. The base plate certainly was the one that was different in condition. I wonder if that comb would work better on my new short comb top plate, or if it just won't work properly with either.

It should work out just fine, I often do this as well (use the same top cap with the SC New, LC New, New Deluxe, and Tech), don't need as many top caps around this way, enjoy the shaves!

Thanks. Anyone have any thoughts about that first, oldest one? Is it silver plate?

Looks like a Single Ring to me. I think I can make out the serial number on the guard plate, and I assume that and the patent date on the handle is what you were talking about. That and no Gillette diamond or "Made in..." stamp is perfectly normal for the earlier Single Rings.

So assuming that's the case, yes, it's silver plate.

Cool. If I like it I may replate since it seems like it's in outstanding condition other than the plating wear on the top plate.

Tech handle, too.

That's what it seemed like, now that you guys mention it. They didn't seem to match when I was cleaning, the gold colors are different and the base plate was grungier.
