Question regarding Milady Decolletee sets

I saw a natural color Milady Decolletee in a vintage store, but they had it as part of a set with a hand held mirror and some other thing. They wanted $95 for the complete set. The razor and case was flawless, but the blade case was missing. It's my impression - after buying one and seeing another one purchased - that they go in the $50 - $60 range?

The hand held mirror was the exact same material as the case. Same stuff I would swear. I didn't even pay attention to what the other thing may have been. I've never seen mention of Gillette combining hand held mirrors with their razors.

I'm thinking about going back later to talk to the owner of that display and offering $55 for the razor only, but I've always encountered reluctance to break up sets.

I dunno, it was a very hard thing for me to do to leave that beauty sitting there. But you got to look awfully darned good to find it in that case!

I would appreciate and suggestions or advice.

PS But I did find a good Khaki Set in the same shop which I did buy for $15.

You'll have to be more specific about which Milady Decolletee
Old type?
New improved?
New?
There are even variations within these.

Your description of a matching mirror makes me think old type in the celluloid case.

edit: I am only attempting to answer the question about what they typically sell for.
I have no idea if Gillette ever offered matching other items (but my gut says no)

New Improved in Natural color:

If $95 within the range - which I don't think it is, there isn't a shipper and the blade case is missing - then I would buy it and own a fancy hand held ladies mirror and it's large hand held mirror, maybe about an 8 inch or so handle.

I just hated living it behind although finding this in the same store help me feel better (handle is completely split, SN F786296):

I wouldn't say that's within range at all. For a New Deluxe, maybe. Not for an improved. The last improved I saw on eBay went for almost 70, but that was complete with cardboard box too.
btw, great score on the khaki set.

Are you certain the mirror is part of this "set"?
I have been to shops where folks have paired stuff together as sets that I know were never sold together, but looking at the materials and such, you'd never know unless you were familiar with the items.

What part of town did you go to? Don't worry I would never go and buy something out from under you. Nice score on that khaki set by the way.
Maybe we should meet up sometime and go crawl through some antique shops.

Agree, I really might give negotiation a try though. Try to separate that razor from the rest of it. Low probability though.

I think you are right Phil. At some point, those things got put together. I can't imagine Gillette ever doing such a thing, but maybe some department store? Maybe the seller too. But the important point is, it doesn't add value to the razor set. Darn hard to see such a nice razor with case and just walking away from it.

I crawl alone.  No, seriously. Thanks for the offer though, I give my 7 yo $5 if she spots a razor and I buy it. $1 for just spotting and not buying. For a brush it's $1/.50

She earned 3.50 today and she didn't spot the Khaki or the Milady.

It was just a thought. If you ever see a rather large guy (I work as a personal trainer) holding the leash to a yellow and chocolate lab sitting outside an antique store say Hi. My wife and I usually take turns looking and waiting outside the stores. Most shop owners try to get me to take my dogs inside as they're well behaved but I think it's a trick. The chocolate Lab has a very happy tail and he would Knock over and break have of the items in the store forcing me to buy them.

I rarely go without my wife and daughter and if I ever do get off by myself, it's a real spur of the moment thing. But I'll be looking out for the dogs. And I don't think you are being paranoid, I think some folks set up their displays to fall over at the slightest touch.
