Just throwing this out there because I am curious. Has anyone noticed a difference in the pungency or strength of the smell of his cream/soap lather when face lathering vs. when bowl lathering (or palm lathering if that's your thing)?

No, I haven't. It's the same soap and the same water no matter how I'm mixing up the lather.
Yep that's a new one for me as well.
What product are you experiencing this with?
It could be coming from your brush if it's not broken in yet.
For what its worth I've never noticed, or smelled, any difference either way.

If your using tabac it stinks both ways!!!

Is it stronger when face lathering?
I just got another new horse hair brush. It smells like a wet horse, but it will be fine after a dozen or two uses. Perhaps it's your brush.
Nope, no difference. But I agree with a comment above......that odor could be coming from your brush.
You might notice the smell more if you are face lathering because there is soap on your face for longer? I don't know.
As others said, the brush.
