I had the day off so i hit up a few antique stores and found this ... took it home and gave it a good bath... the steam from the water smelled HORRIBLE.
That's a great find and a beautiful clean-up! The smell comes from the sulfur in the tarnish -- tarnish is silver sulfide, and the baking soda/aluminum foil trick essentially causes the sulfur to let go of the silver and bond with the aluminum, which it has a greater affinity for. Of course, some of it also reacts with other things in the water and just generally gets around making a stink.
Incidentally, are my eyes going bad or is that an open-comb GEM Damaskeene that was next to it in the tray, just above the Fatboy?
+1. They seem pretty far out of line to me.Nice razors there, but from what I can see on the tags, their prices are kinda crazy. I think you found the only good deal there.
