Preshave Oil and Horrible Lather

Tonight I thought I'd try a little vitamin e as a preshave oil. After showering and using a hot towel, I used a dime size amount of vitamin e. I made a generous amount of thick lather using Tabac soap. As soon as the lather touched my face all the air left the lather leaving this thin crappy lather. I shaved with it anyway and used more soap on the second and third passes. My Fatip Grande also did not slide across my face as easily as normal. I thought it was a really crappy shave, but once I used some AS balm and my face was dry, I was impressed with the final results. My question is would you sacrifice great lather and shave for better end results?

It depends on whether one is "goal" or "process" oriented. If one is goal oriented, it is the end result that is most important, whereas if one is process oriented, the most important thing is how you get to the end, not the end itself.

I choose both process and goal orientations. Great shave experience and BBS as a target. On a good day both are achieved. One need not sacrifice either, but if you are experimenting you must be prepared to sacrifice both. You are experimenting and that is part of action for many of us. Only you can judge what is right. I strive to enjoy the ride regardless of destinations reached.

I shave for comfort. BBS is nice to reach but I only do that every few days to allow the hair to grow back and the skin to truly recover. Going for it everyday makes my neck irritated.

It's funny - based on this question, and the events that led to it, I assumed you were a newb, until I checked your join date and number of posts. Surely someone with your shaving experience has found a way to achieve good results while still being able to enjoy the shave itself. Were the results of this shave really so good that you'd be willing to endure a subpar shave experience to get them? So, I guess my answer to your question is "no," because I have found multiple ways of enjoying my shaves while getting good results.

Also, I agree with Mars: Vitamin E oil is way too thick to be used as a pre-shave.

Today I used the same amount of the same product with better results. I used the preshave oil / vitamin e, then scooped out some lather and massaged it into my whiskers. I used a hot towel, then re-lathered and shaved. The hot towel basically took off the excess vitamin e before my shave.

I do agree with all of you about vitamin e being way too thick. I thought I'd try it though. I'll have to try mixing it with something lighter.

I have tried vitamin e oil (just a drop maybe two) on top of mug soap with success. Why? Just because it was sitting on the bathroom counter ...

I have no idea what the benefits would be from using It however…
