Preferred Razors

A while ago I posted asking about what razors to make a 7 day set with. Well, I've been buying and selling a few odd razors here and there and I found I have a much stronger preference for smiling wedges then I thought. For whatever reason, I find they suit me very well and give a DFS with little effort. I've found that all my full hollows are getting no use!

My take away is this: experiment and find what type of blades you like.

If only there was some sort of SR library where you could borrow SRs for a week at a time.

Actually now I have to go look into that...

When you find what you like, concentrate on that, but definitely revisit the types that you previously discarded, once in a long while. You may find that your taste has changed, or that improvement in your technique or more knowledge improves your results with blades you once set aside for the current favorite style.

Once you are pretty good at honing, ebay can be a powerful resource. You find a lot of garbage there, but some gems in the rough, too, and often they go pretty cheap.

If you are up for a challenge, you could always order a dozen or two dozen Gold Dollars, fix them all up, pick out the 7 best ones for special treatment, and let that be your 7 set. Do a search for threads where Mycarver has posted pics of his GD projects, for inspiration. The #66 has a tendency to develop a slight smile by itself, and while it isn't a wedge, it is still a fairly heavy blade.

I may be on the outside but my favorite blade is a Whitham Sheffield shoulderless shorty.

Yea, definitely on the outside I am

I agree with Slash on the revisiting of blades as experience can bring old discarded back into rotation. As I add to my collection revisiting the originals sometimes pays well. That shorty is probably a great shaver. Recently, while pondering why a TI Le Canadien I have works so well, I realized it is the shortest blade I own by a good half inch, and that is an advantage on the neck. Almost always BBS. Stay on the outside.

The BST kinda serves like that library. You can pick up good shavers in a bunch of styles for around $35 pretty often and can resell them for the same price - you're only out one way shipping.

Now if I could only bring myself to sell instead of just buy...
