Post Shave Razor Prep/Clean-up

Hey peeps, what do you all do post-shave with your DE razors? Just rinse, shake and be done with it? Remove the blade and wipe it down with a piece of tissue? Douse the whole thing in rubbing alcohol, shake and be done with it? Store in mineral/other oil?

Also is it bad to douse the razor in rubbing alcohol and shake (and that's it, not wiping down, etc.) to prevent the water from creating mineral deposits on the razor?

Thanks, I only ask because I haven't used my DE in a long time and now that I've started straight shaving with success I want to be able to go back to that as my go-to 'faster' shave rather than a disposable (especially now that I've been told how bad the Merkur blades are and how much nicer of a shave I can expect with better bldaes)..

thanks B&B :thumbup1:

Some people will do all sorts of stuff from a dip in alcohol to more involved rituals such as washing & drying, stropping, etc etc.
It's a 3-5 cent piece of steel that you only use a couple of times before throwing out. I just rinse mine and give it a shake. Occasionally if I took down a section of growth I'll open it up and rinse to make sure I get any stragglers. Other than that I just give the razor a wipedown with a towel when I ditch an old blade. It's really personal preference as to what you feel like doing but generally a rinse is all that's needed.

Rinse, shake, done. I may wipe it a bit with a wet wash cloth if it looks gunky. Every week or two on blade change day I disassemble and scrub or clean with Windex and a paper towel.

Rinse shake and put away. When I toss the blade I give it a quick clean with a toothbrush and some dish soap but it doesn't take much time to keep it looking good.

+1 ...been doing it this way for years and have never had a problem.

Pretty much the same (and I'd been worrying lately, wondering if I ought to be taking the blade out and storing it separately, etc.). Rinse it well, then when it's time to change the blade, it gets a good wipe with rubbing alcohol and a rough paper towel to help get the soap scum off.

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
I usually dispose of the blade, give a quick rinse and dry them put away. bout once every couple months i'll take my razors and give them a toothpaste/toothbrush scrub to remove the soap build up.

Today however I got such a great shave with a Feather blade I decided to give a 2nd shave tomorrow so i just left the blade in the razor dried it off and wrapped a tissue around it so I'd remember there's a blade still in it.

I am one who rinses under hot water, lets dry for a minute or two, and then dip in the rubbing alcohol.

i just rinse, shake and store. if the head got alot of residue in it i just unscrew and wipe everything.

Rinse, shake, put away. A good cleaning when I change blades. Alcohol, peroxide, or barbacide rinse when switching in the rotation. Taking the blade out is only necessary if you manage to find a carbon steel blade. The stainless blades won't rust or corrode- if they do it's not because it's in the razor, but because they are in someting that would also corrode the razor by itself.

I just found some Gillette Platinums at home (not 7OClocks). Are they any good? I've already heard the Merkur blades are terrible and Firewalker is sending me over a sampler, but I wanted to give my DE another try (and try out my MWF for the first time) while I waited.

Also are most of you going 1-2 shaves per blade tops? 3 sometimes? I would imagine rinsing with alcohol makes em last a tiny bit longer?

Just rinse with blade in and shake daily. Once a week, I remove and dispose the blade, use Dawn foaming on the razor and dry with soft cloth before placing at the back end of my rotation.

I'm almost the same. Rinse, shake, done. On blade change day I shine it up with a wet towel, and every few weeks take a soapy toothbrush to clean it.

How do you all clean and polish your razors? I've seen various things on the forums such as using an old toothbrush with some non-whitening toothpaste, with dish detergent, or even just hot water..

Rinse it and put it away for my Merkur, for the Gilette slim I will sometimes open the silo doors and clean the blade off a bit as it can hide crap under the blade if I use it on a low setting.

Rust on the blade seems to never happen even with carbon steel blades (I find stainless blades to be worthless) and the process of taking them out and putting them back in has a chance to ding the edge and make the blade useless.

until I see rust on a blade then I won't change my routine, and if a DE razor ever rusts I'll just throw it away for sucking

:thumbup1: This is pretty much what I do.....occasionally when I remove the blade (after 3 shaves & toss it), I'll spray some scrubbing bubbles if there is soap gunk & clean with a few swipes of the toothbrush & rinse it off......

I've gone 3 (legs, 2 ATG passes) so far... but I felt like that was a mistake with the Derby Extras. No problem with the blue Personnas.
