What's new

Combining razors in one shave?

I'm new here. I've been wet shaving again for a couple of months. I used to wet shave when I was a young man. I grew up in the 50's and 60's, so that meant shaving with a DE razor but with canned shaving creme. (I don't remember my dad ever using a shaving brush.) When I was in my 20's and beyond it seemed like the time spent shaving was wasted time - so I found ways to just get it over with. I used cartridge razors and electric razors. Now that I'm in my 70's I'm back to enjoying the pleasure of building the shaving cream and wet shaving.

I have watched many shaving videos on YouTube and read many posts on this site and elsewhere. My question is: do any of you use more than one razor for a single shave? The only time I've seen this done on a video is when two razors are being compared. One side of the face is shaved with one razor and the other is shaved with the competitor. But I've discover that one razor does not necessarily work for my entire face. I like the smooth feeling of shaving against the grain above my upper lip. But the razor I use of the rest of my face may be two aggressive for this area.

For example, yesterday I used my Rockwell T2 to shave, but used my Henson mild to shave above my upper lip. Using this method I was able to get a BBS on my entire face.

Since I've never seen or heard of anyone else doing this I wanted your guys opinion.

The only time I do this is for learning better straight razor honing and shaving technique. Today I started with a straight, but I didn't have it sharp enough to get a decent shave, so I switched to a Feather shavette, but didn't have good enough technique to get a great shave, so I finished up with a DE razor. This let me test out my straight edge, get some more practice straight shaving, and get a good shave without being too hard on my skin. Long-term goal is to get a great result with one razor, but I am not going to push it and tear up my skin while I am still learning.

A lot of guys use a different razor for the head shave, but I am not a head shaver. anything that can handle my upper lip is going to work on the rest of my face, so I never change adjustable settings or change DE razors during a shave unless I am trying to figure something out or fix a problem.

I smell like a Christmas pudding
I have read of people doing that but I guess not for every shave on an ongoing basis. Plenty of men change settings on an adjustable between passes, or for different parts of the face, which I suppose is the same thing. I sometimes start with a straight or shavette and then cleanup with a DE if my technique is not up to scratch. I would guess that ATG on my upper lip is the only area where I sometimes need a slightly less aggressive razor, but I use a lighter touch, or just put up with it, rather than switch razors. Do whatever works for you.

I've read of many people who use a different razor to shave their head as opposed to the face. I've done razor comparisons like you mentioned in your initial post. I don't like using multiple razors. I face and head shave daily and use the same razor for both.

I shaved a fortune
I have 3 or 4 whiskers that grow right next to my nose. Most of my razors had a base plate that extends out past the blade, for safety reasons, I'm sure... This is the same with both my DE and SE razors. My single edge Claymore Evolution AC (Artist Club) has the blade very close to the end of the safety bar on both ends. It gets to those few pesky whiskers. I use it for every shave and add my main razor on a whim. It might add a minute or two at the most to the shave time, including the clean-up.

I will occasionally use a couple of different razors for a 2 pass shave. Most often I use my dads old '59 Red Tip and just do a single pass with a little buffing. Sometimes I will use the Red Tip for a first pass and then use my '58 Tech with a new blade for the second pass. This gives a BBS/DFS and is very comfortable. I usually grow a full beard in the winter and just use the Tech to keep everything trimmed up.

Somewhere between 61 and dead
do any of you use more than one razor for a single shave?

Sure! Sometimes I'm using a really aggressive razor and like to have another one ready as a bailout razor if things go pear-shaped.

At the moment I'm learning more about shavettes and barber straights, which means having that other razor for cleanups and shaving around things I'd like to keep, like ears. :)

Somewhere around here there's even a thread dedicated to the "Daily Double."

Slickness is a sickness
The only time that I use two razors is when I'm using a barber razor/shavette.

I can get a DFS only using the shavette, but in order to get a near BBS shave in my goatee area (around my chin and upper lip), I sometimes touch up with a DE razor.

See post #79,011 in the thread linked below. @BobbyB uses a mild King C. Gillette for most of his shave followed by a less mild Van Der Hagen razor (rebranded Weishi 9306) for buffing. Great example of what you were considering in you original post.

Welcome to B&B! This is a great place.

You can shave any way you'd like, the point of this whole site is to enjoy shaving, share your experiences, and get good shaves!

I only use one razor at a time, but have five different ones in use in rotation. Makes it easy to compare blades.

Welcome to B&B!

There is no general rule on how you shave. Do whatever works for you and enjoy the shave is what matters.

Using two razors is no different than using adjustable or multi plate razors. Some prefer to use milder razor on their last pass or clean up.

I have been in same boat as you for many years, never had to use Two Razors to accomplish one good shave. Have you considered a Vintage Gillette Fatboy, Slim or other multi blade position razor. Some can be had in 20 - 30 buck range.

Is it swell time?
My question is: do any of you use more than one razor for a single shave?
Only recently have I started using two razors per shave simply because of the fun of using two razors. But it depends on my mood of the day and if I have to leave for work early. Other than that it’s just fun using more than one razor - although I will about it also has something to do with having too many razors to begin with.

Here is the thread some have mentioned already:

From a purely technical point of view as done already mentioned you might use specific razors for specific jobs. Merkur even has a specific moustache area razor with a low head and triangular blades.

So do with you think is best. Milder for ATG? Go for it! A little more effective WTG and only on the first pass? Go for it!!

Welcome to B&B! Enjoy!
