It seems that most folks think it's a mild shaver, which it may be, but it works great for my light beard, two pass shave.

Yep! It is my favorite DE razor by far. I like it so much, I wish I had the stand for it. If I had to choose just one DE razor to use from here on out, it would be the AS-D1.
It is beautifully made, very precise, supremely mild and safe, and effective (at least for me). To make it more effective (but still keeping it very safe and mild), I will often use a shim or two with it.

Top three for me, aesthetics-wise. Probably my favorite shaver performance-wise. I do think it's mild, but I appreciate a mild razor for most shaves. I'll pull out something more aggressive when I haven't shaved for a week or so though. The Feather ain't the tool for that job.
It is among my favorites for sure, it is mild but efficient, better as a daily razor, not great for a few days growth. I'm happy to have it in my arsenal. The Gillette Tech is a great alternative for those that don't want to spend that much on a razor IMO.

^ True. The AS-D1 seems to have been modeled on the Tech (which is also one of my favorite razors).
Its a Great Razor, The only Razor i know that Turns Feather blade into. Sissy instead of the tough guy it is. This Razor Really Tames the Feather blade Like no other razor can, and the shaves are smooth as butter 
And definitely in my top 3 as well. It's smooth, irrational free shave everytime. Not to mention the sheer beauty of the razor itself. It's Japanese craftsmanship at its best. I love he fact that the weight of the razor does the work for you. All it takes is the right angle, no pressure and you are in razor heaven.

I enjoy many different razors, slants, adjustables, Aristocrats, Super Speeds, etc.
But as the saying goes, "If I could only have one...." I would have to say the AS-D1 holds that spot.
