Plisson opinion

Hey everyone. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what a Plisson size 10 in European Grey might feel like. I enjoy firm, small, scrubby brushes; hence, I am a Rooney 1/1 and 3/1 fan. Will the Plisson be similar, or will it be on the floppier side? Thanks for the advice!

I just purchased a #12 Plisson in European Gray from Henry (professorchaos). It is nice and firm with little or no flop at all. Comparing it to the #10 Chinese Gray Plisson with Antiqued Brass handle I owned it is very firm. Next to the #12 HMW Plisson I owned I'd say the #12 in European Gray is 85% of what that brush was as far as softness and firmness. I also owned a #10 in BLACK badger and it was firmer but with significant scritch. The HMW was the top of the line brush feel for me. If funds are really not an issue, I'd say spring for a HMW....if they are a factor, I believe you would be very happy with the European Gray. If you end up not liking it I'd imagine you could unload it for 80 to 90% of what you paid for it so it wouldn't be a huge loss.

Hello, I just received the Plisson Size 10, so canna comment on performance .. but the Plisson is less dense & with longer loft than the Rooney 3/1 (have one of those) I expect it to be just a tad, mebbe a ch "floppier"

Thanks for the posts. I like my brushes stiff, so I think I am going to have to wait until I have the funds for the HMW. Maybe a Simpson in the meantime! :)

I have a Size 14 European Grey from John (Hawkeye). I definitely would not call it floppy. Less dense than a Rooney Super, maybe, but the shafts are thick and resilient, like those of a Rooney Finest or two-band super from Simpson's (well, maybe almost ). As Mike pointed out, the tips of the EG may not be quite as soft as those of the HMW, which is probably more like those of the other two I mentioned.

If you were thinking of a Simpson's best, it would probably depend on which model (in terms of density, knot size, and loft), but in general, I would say that the Plisson would be at least as scrubby. That's the original Simpsons. The one and only SimFix I tried was comparatively floppier. YMMV.

How is the EuroGray treating you? Interestingly, my HMW has so much loft that it is pretty floppy. Although I was aiming for something different, I really like the brush.

splen·did
Pronunciation:\ˈsplen-dəd\

2: illustrious, grand

I like it! (but it makes me want MORE Plissonssssssssssssssssssssssss!)

Mike, your old Plisson HMW that I believe has now gone to Ameet is one of the most incredible brushes I have ever seen. It is THE brush that made me recognize the Plisson brand as something special and I really lusted after that brush for months. If you desire more Plissons then I hope good karma comes your way and leads another fine specimen to your doorstep.

Having used both the #10 HMW and #12 Black Plissons, I cant say that either one was floppy. I sold the HMW because I thought it was over rated for the price, would have kept the #12 black if it had been a little smaller.
The Rooney Supers are a much denser brush and my current preference, also in the 1-1 and 3-1s.

I am VERY tempted to try a Plisson, but it doesn't sound like I'll like one. Must.....resist....the temptation....I guess I just have a SBAD flare. :)

I bought a size 16 HMW and thought it was a great brush. So much so that I recently bought a size 14 HMW with a beautiful horn handle. This brush is much different and I have not made my mind up about it yet. It does not have the backbone of the size 16 and splays a lot in use. I've only used it a couple of times but I don't think I will like it as much as the 16. It does make an incredible amount of lather and maybe I will adapt to it. If not I suppose I will end up putting it on the BST forum and see if anyone is interested in it.

Save the money and get a Rooney. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't get how Plisson can justify their crazy prices.

Have you considered the Rooney Heritage brushes yet?

... says the guy who was supposed to cut himself back to just one brush. :001_rolle (Yeah, we all know that SBAD really 's'bad.)

I do have a Rooney Heritage (Stubby size 2). I like it but it is a little large for my taste and it doesn't give me a whole lot of lather back. I also have a few other Rooney's that I absolutely love (1/1, 3/1). My SBAD is subsiding, perhaps time will lessen the symptoms. So far I have been able to resist the Plisson. ;)
