Payday Loan Scam

"Just to let you know. The FBI is monitoring this call for quality purposes. Please stay on the line so that our agents can assist you better..... (elevator music follows)... All of our agents are currently out arresting perpetrators but stay on the line and one of our agents will be with you shortly....(elevator music follows)..."

Scammers have been doing a similar thing claiming they are from Microsoft and that you have an issue with your computer and they will assist you to fix it if you just click on the link they will send you. It then activates a remote access tool and off they go.

I always ask them where they work. If they say Sydney and give the listed MS address in Sydney, I then ask them how they got to work that day and what they can see out the window. This always results in a stream of cursing!

I would do the airhorn but I haven't got round to buying one yet and suspect my kids would probably find it and give the cat an ear canal cleanout.

The other option I've thought of is to ask them to call me back on a different number, and I give them the number of an ASIO agent which I happen to have.

Gents, it's an unfortunate circumstance, and thanks to the OP for making people aware.
Forewarned is forearmed.

However - let us not resort to classifying these callers as Indian or Pakistani or any specific Nationality unless you have concrete proof of the individuals nationality.
Some of these scams have been perpetrated from Pakistan, some have been perpetrated from India, some have been perpetrated from other countries as well.

Pakistan and India are very different countries and it does no justice to smear one country when it may have been someone from another country entirely.

The scam is the issue, and we do no service to anyone by trying to specifically tie the caller to either Pakistan or India.

Tell them you have the $1100 ready for them in cash, but they'll have to come and pick it up in person. I can recommend a nice sausage factory where you can meet.

I would tell them to go have "relations" (actually a four letter f-word that is against the rules to say here) with their mother, father, brother, sister and grandparents. I could have fun saying different sexual and profane things for them to go do with themselves and their immediate families. The caller usually hangs up the phone within a few minutes of this abuse.

I do have to agree that we should not automatically blame Pakistan or India for this activity. From my research quite a bit of this crap comes from Nigeria but we should not automatically blame them unless we know for sure.

We have normal caller ID and caller ID on our TV as well (something our cable provider does free of charge), so whenever the telephone rings and a 1(800) number (dead giveaway for a telemarketer or a scam), the race is on to see who can scream, blow an airhorn, etc. into the phone first. We rarely get calls from 1(800) numbers now :thumbup1:

The problem is that these calls are coming from hundreds of different numbers in dozens of different zip codes. Not a 1-800 number in the bunch.

I just play it safe and never pick up a call from numbers I don't know. I just let it roll over to the answering machine and listen in while they leave their message. Unfortunately, many of them don't. But at least it shows up on my Caller ID, so I can google it and find out where its coming from.

I had a rogue dept collector harassing me over a debt that I did not owe. I finally let all calls on that phone number go to the answering machine, and months later they gave up. I am not required to answer the phone simply because I have one! I know others that also screen all calls, and call back immediately to the numbers they are familiar with.

And that is one of the problems. We were getting calls all hours of the day and night from what looked like a real telephone number - that would change with each call. The calls all were for a debt reduction plan. But if you tried to call the number back you learned it was not operational. If you did a Google search for the number you found others complaining about the same scam.

Go to Google and type in "Indian scam" (yes, I know many of these scammers are also non-Indian). Some of the videos are hilarious.

I literally have spent hours watching these. There's one guy, "IRISHBUDDAFILTH", who's whole channel is entirely devoted to recording videos of him screwing with these guys. And to back up Phil's very well taken point, these guys seem to come from all different nations, including males and females with no accents at all. One of my favorite lines, from one of my favorite television shows, "The Wire" is

"You know what the problem is? We used to make things in this country, build things , now we just stick our hands in the next guys pocket"
