Open Tucks and Orphan Blades

A recent clean up of the den led to the discovery of a number of stray tucks and random blades. I am going to try and use them up. Starting with the Wilkies.

I have two left. I used the other three for blade longevity challenges. They don't last particularly long, but the shave is comfortable. I picked the Tech because it's not favorite of mine, requiring too much attention to angle. Tonight that meant being more careful and hence more aware of the blade.

As I said, performed well in a one-pass-plus-touchup shave.

Second shave with a Wizamet Polsilver Stainless. Not as legendary as the Super Iridium ones. Not as good as the Astra Super Stainless, which is a top tier blade. But good. Shaved better with the Gillette Super Adjustable 84 set to 5. First shave I had it on 2. Too mild for the Polsilver.

Shaved a second time with the Schick as my travel setup and upon my return, packed it away. Knowing it's durability, I could be shaving with the chromium Schick for years as infrequently as I travel.

Once home, swapped the Polsilver into the Gillette ball-handled Tech.

Was able to buff my way to a smooth shave, but three shaves is all I'm interested in pushing this blade.

My intent was to go through all my orphan blades while running them through my lesser used razors. In practice, I've been running these same few blades -- the vintage UK Wilkinson Chromium and the Polsilver -- through different razors.

Anyway, new blade...

You get a Merkur blade with every new Merkur razor. I love these razors and their blades perform admirably in them.

I would have to go back to old shave logs to see what my impression was. Uninspired in my 7 O'clock plastic razor I got for free with a tuck of Platinum Blacks, a fine blade.

When I was going through my blade acquisition period , I went through a NOS/vintage blade phase. Most have proven stellar. Some not so:

Was able to get a decent multi -pass shave with one side. Sharpness had degraded on the other.

You, Sir, are an inspiration!! :thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1:

One of these days I need to start a similar project!!

Second to last Racer in a Parker 26 open comb. I corked the blade to see if it would help. Nope. If there was ever a candidate for a one-and-done blade, this is it. I don't know if I want to experience a second shave with it. First pass was horrible. Lot of buffing to get a clean shave.

Last of the Racers. Finally found a razor that works with this blade. I had a pretty decent shave, much to my surprise considering how crappy the previous two Racers were.

Also, I'm not a devotee of the Tech, like many are. But a decent shave, repeated this morning, makes me want to explore other blades in the Tech.

I love my pre-war Tech. I do find that I get best results with sharper blades in them, like most of the Gillette family. GSB, KCG, Nacet, Permasharp, etc. I really enjoy the Indian Green too.

Anything around an Astra or below requires too much detail work with the Tech for my taste.

Binned the Racer. Next in line is a NOS Wilkinson. I chased after the legendary Wilkerson. Haven't found it. Curious to see how it does in my current obsession razor.

Binned the Wilkerson Chromium. One side of the blade had degraded, but got several good shaves out of the other side.

Now for a true classic, the French Gillette Silver Platinum Plus. So sharp, so smooth, so much longevity. I am pretty sure I can get 50 shaves. You might not see me for a while.
