Open Comb: Long vs. Short

In regards to the Gillette New, why would you go with a long over a short toothed comb? Are they that different?

I like the way the long comb feels on my face...I have both and both are great shavers...but the long comb just sees more action...seems to be just a little, very tiny bit smoother

Just got a "NEW" in the mail today, haven't used it yet. Looks like it is a "long tooth", will give it a try tomorrow.

(just trying to find a DE that gives me a comparable shave to my SE's. The EJ 89 DL is a step in the right direction but need another to work into the rotation)

I shave my head too and I like the way the long combs don't poke me in the head the way most other opened comb razors do.
Also the turned over long combs make maintaining proper blade angle easy.

Yeah, The EJ89DL is my first and only DE razor. I got it due to the suggestions of it being a good starter razor. I may replace it with an open comb but I don't know much about them. I absolutely love Bob's razors and am considering a Bull Mastiff in the future. They are a work of art.

Here is an image of the Open Combs I use. For me the Long Comb and the New Improved are great shavers:

Great info on the different types of combs.

I personally like the longer comb as well. Just shaves a lot better/closer for me.

Here's the best info I've seen yet on short vs. long combs:

Interestingly, most discussions point to the long comb as being milder.
Woodfluter's info says the opposite. I've only tried a long comb, and I remember needing to be VERY cautious, or it would BITE!

I have never tried a short comb, but I would not say a long comb is aggressive. It is a very good, smooth shaver. It shaves about as close as my old-types (smooth shavers too).

My daughter found me a near mint USA short comb (where would a be without my girl). Will try it this evening.

Thanks for passing that on. I shave my head too, and have recently been thinking about getting an open comb razor.

I have a Merkur classic 1904 open comb that I absolutely love for head shaving. Very smooth and forgiving and does a great job if you go a few days between shaves.

Has anyone ever made a asymetric razor? That is closed on one side, open comb on the other or long and short etc? I'm not sure how you would use it but is seems like a interesting idea.
