What's new

Oh,Oh!!!

To shamelessly misquote W. Churchill:

"Gillette, a company whose aim is to shave billions of faces with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose".

Tweaky, tweak to hike the price. Nothing to see here people. That's a merry go round I've stepped off, and now all I can watch the other people getting dizzy.

Nothing beats being able to create your own shave, IMO. It's a shame it's a declining skill; marketing tells people they don't need any, and can just replace it with wasteful plastic doo dads.

I have to admit the fusion can give me a smoother shave if I use proper prep, and it is faster if I don't have a lot of time. It is in my rotation along with all my other razors. However I prefer the more traditional methods of shaving more. Plus the 41' Ranger Tech sitting in my brush and razor stand just looks so cool.

Thanks for the link! When you see how others live you realize how blest you are.

For $6.99 you can mimic a hot towel? Let me see, what could I mimic a hot towel for? I could do it pretty much for free but I would have to use a hot towel.

And as the fusion goes up 10% I am paying less for DE blades by finding better places to order them in quantity and getting more shaves out of them by improving my technique. Will they send someone to my house to make me comply?

best,

+1. I totally agree.

And the worst part is, all the idiots that will wind up spending millions of $$ on this crap and think they are getting the "best a man can get"...:cursing:

As much as we're all inclined to heap scorn upon the Fusion and its kind, the fact remains that it really IS a billion dollar industry, and many guys DO get a fairly decent, fast, easy shave out of them. Ok, you get what you pay for...for Fusion users, they get a passable shave in two minutes without thinking about it. They get convenience, ease of use, minimal need for prep and other products, etc. For guys like US, we love all the variety, the multitude of classy soaps, creams, brushes, blades, new and vintage DEs, etc. We love the time it takes to have our shaves, the leisure and luxury that goes with it, etc. Polar opposites in demographics and customer aim, and that's just fine. If dudes want to overpay for a subpar shave (in terms of quality of equipment and end result) and are happy with it, that's just fine. Gillette/P&G isn't telling you to stop doing it your way, they are just chasing the bottom line, and are going where the money is: the hip, young, uninformed, convenience-oriented short attention span masses, not our little niche of hobbyists. They are not stupid, they are zillionaires, lol. Keep in mind that Gillette has never really steered too far from King Gillette's original business model - cheap tools with more expensive replaceable-by-necessity parts. All that's happened since the single rings of yore is just noisier bells and shinier whistles.

To be fair, as one of those idiots until recently, I had no idea DE shaving even existed anymore. Never saw the razors for sale in a store, never saw the blades. My dad used an electric, so I never saw him use one. It was only through chance that I stumbled onto wet shaving.

I think it is a fair guess that at least 80% of the folks around here were in a similar boat...I know I switched to DE after getting tired of years of ingrown hairs and the insane expense that went with carts. The switch to using a brush and all the soaps and creams and aftershave stuff was just add-on expense and luxury. The better shaves certainly came, but the net cost increase in the end offset any hope of savings, lol. Don't worry...you and the other 20K-odd members are not idiots, lol.

The Wall Street Journal had an article about this today from the perspective of how challenging this would be in the midst of the recession. I really wish it would have included a bit about the resurgence of traditional wet shaving though as the explosive growth of this forum and mantic's youtube channel illustrate.

I love this line:

"Guys don't say they want more blades. They want more comfort."

Did guys ever say they wanted more blades? I can't envision guys ten years ago using a Mach3, saying, "You know what this needs? Two more blades." It seems to me that guys only ever thought more blades were better after Gillette developed the next big thing and told guys they really wanted more blades. The spin machine is in full effect, as always.

Well said, but to be honest I can't imagine anyone shaving with their DE and going: 'you know what this really needs? ANOTHER blade...like under it or something' or 'perhaps if it had a SECOND blade to tug the hair, and the other chops it'd be a more better shave!'.
