Noxzema vs Proraso Pre/Post Shave

Awhile back my wife made the comment that my Proraso pre/post shave reminded her of Noxzema so recently when placing an order I figured that I would add some to the basket and for $3.83 I couldn't lose. In appearance, it has more of an off white colour and somewhat more of a medicinal smell but in performance it beats the Proraso for me which is saying a lot as I really like the Proraso. Application was the same but the difference was my razor seemed to just glide across my face in a manner that I've yet to experience.

Kosby,
Which Noxzema did you use?

I've been wondering about this too! My wife said the same thing, but she didn't have any Noxema for me to try. But now that you've tried it, I think I'll pick some up! I'll report back with my experience.

I have been using Noxzema for some time now. At under $4.00 for large jar it's inexpensive and works just like Proraso as pre and post shave.

When I started shaving, I had oily, problem skin, and used a lot of Sea Breeze to dry out some of the oiliness, and occasional Noxzema applications to help clean out my skin, in combination with very hot water. Besides the basic "Skin Cream" there also were shave creams, in jars and in tubes, and canned shave foams, with the Noxzema label, but I don't think I've seen any men's products in twenty years with that label on them.

I did use their shave cream, and the shave foam as well, but stopprd using the skin cream, after I was about twenty (52 years ago).

I've never used the Proraso pre/post, but we used to use Noxzema (cream from a blue tub) for sunburn as a kid. Is this the same as you are talking about? Do you put on and lather over it then shave? Or do you wash it off first?

Sorry for a silly question!

i use a generic brand of noxzema for 2 bucks at a local dollar store i use it to wash my face my dad said back in the 70's nd 80's when he started shaving he used to shave he used a very light amount of noxzema as a pre shave and then he would wash his face after the shave with it as well

When I first started shaving as a teenager for the first ten years I used nothing but Noxzema Skin cream to shave with. I painted it on with a shaving brush and went at it with my straight razor. It is excellent stuff. As time went by I tried and preferred shaving soaps/creams. If they were not available I'd go back to Noxzema in a heartbeat over canned goo. It gives a great shave but lacks in the scent department and it's very protective if I recall correctly. I pretty much like soaps and creams because they rinse off easier and they have better scents.

I just apply the Noxzema in the blue tub and make my lather then apply the lather over the Noxzema and shave. When I am done I apply a small amount and leave it.

+1 It has been a summer time staple of mine for years. I actually prefer it to Proraso Pre/Post because it is not as heavy and a little dab still goes a long way. Cheaper and easy to acquire is also a plus.

I tried it today and I like it. I applied it just the same as I would the Proraso pre-shave cream (by rubbing it in all over my beard), but this time I didn't rinse before shaving. Just applied my lather over it. I think tomorrow I'll rinse and then lather as usual. I felt like there was a little too much Noxema still on my face. But it is definitely a good lubricant.

I don't mind the smell all that much, reminds me of a clean scent. I hope that means I'll also like my Arko stick that will arrive next week :)
