What's new

Not sure if Gillette Slim Adjustable is working properly.

Open the doors, put in razor blade, turn dial to 1. Close doors. Observe how low the edge of the blade on both sides sits on the razor where it would shave you.

Open the doors, turn dial to 9, close doors and observe blade. Is it sitting higher, that is, a bigger gap between blade and razor safety bar? If yes, it's adjusting.

Then you can go through each number, each time OPENING the doors before changing numbers, then closing doors and see if blade is moving ever so slightly each number.

**** I really don't think its adjusting. The dial slides up and down when adjusting but I notice no difference in the gap between the blade and bar.

Start shaving with the Slim set at 1. Pause. Open doors, turn to 9, close doors. Continue shaving. If you don't feel a difference, it's not working.

How about this... when setting it to 9 and closing it, it will click down to 1 without any resistance. Is that a good indicator that it is not adjusting?

Dial it down to 1 and open the doors. Look down at the razor head from above. See those 4 little posts that poke up through the bottom? Those are a part of that adjustment mechanism. That whole plate should move freely up and down at this point. Push up from below and push down from above. Are they moving freely? If not they are probably gunked up and a good soaking, followed by moving it up and down should take care of it with repeated attempts.

No. It will go that direction without resistance. But with a blade in it, and starting at 1 and dialing to 9, you will encounter resistance. It SHOULD flat out refuse to dial up to 9. If it happens in that direction but not the other, then it must be working.

No resistance either way. The description says it is in perfect working order. I guess I will be contacting the seller tomorrow. First item I bought off eBay.

Is there a way to fix it or is it broken for good?

It's not broken, the adjustment mechanism is just jammed in the fully open position.

The adjustment mechanism is actually pretty basic, and there is little that can go wrong with it beyond being fouled up with decades old gunk.

A very good cleaning should do the trick!! :thumbup1:

Soak it in SoftSCrub or maybe simple green overnite then dial up and down 1-9 9-1 a few times and see if that works if not I would soak it some more. Hey you could try runnin it under the faucet with cold water runnin and see if the metal shrinks enuff to let u get it unjammed. Maybe some 3in1 oil or some other lubricant? whatever you do dont use a solvent on it like wd-40 or pbdirtblaster as it may take the finish right off. Gd LUck

I put some borax and baking soda in a bowl with boiling water. It's soaking in that right now while adjusted at the 9 position since that is where it is stuck (unless it should be on 1?).

I also plan on boiling it when I get home. If that doesn't work, are there any other ways to get it unstuck?

It's likely stuck because of decades of hardened crud inside it. You need to keep soaking it in warm (not boiling) water with soap/scrubbing bubbles/vinegar/whatever works/ and periodically working the adjustments and doors to try to break up the gunk. It make take 30 minutes or it might take 2 days to finally get it all loosened and out.

I had this problem with a gunked up Fatboy that I recently got. The adjustment plate that is above the adjuster knob should move up and down when the doors are open. If it doesn't, that's what's stuck.

On mine I got it to loosen slightly with 24 hour soaks in dish soap and water. What really got it loose was pouring lighter fluid on top of the plate. Be careful with this if you have paint left in the numbers on your adjuster.

Then I gently pried the plate up and down with a screw driver until it started moving. Repeat as necessary until it fully loosens up.

Here's the thread on my issue.

This is the plate that should move when the doors are open.
