NOS Blades

Does anyone else ever question the legitimacy of NOS blades? I mean, if people can counterfeit a Fusion blade and its packaging...surely they can counterfeit NOS blades.

Going past NOS, does anyone else ever question the legitimacy of most eBay blades? Some people say it wouldn't be lucrative enough...I would beg to differ. People could make money on the increasing niche of DE shaving.

Wasn't NOS but about a year back or so there was a big batch of counterfeit LORD blades all over ebay so yeah, it's possible.

Everything is possible. For the same reason I wouldn't get any Fusion or Gillette Blades on ebay if I was to get some.

NOS = New OLD Stock

LORDS were counterfeit and it was hard to prove to ebay they were. Now that the distribution is done right and pricing is right on Ebay, you wont see counterfeits any longer.

My option SUNA, becareful who you buy from.

Oh great I just ordered some Sensor Excels from a vendor on here/eBay (dridiot).

Don't worry at all about Dridiot/Jason. He's a well-respected member here and has a long record of satisfied customers, myself included. Now if you've never heard of someone and the deal looks too good to be true it probably is but buy with confidence from B&B vendors!

As far as I'm aware the whole "counterfeit blades" thing happened one time, with one product. I don't see it as being an ongoing problem.

Given the high quality of the NOS Gillette and Schick blades, I don't think anyone could counterfeit them in any believable manner. Not only that, they'd have to reproduce shelf wear and such to make the packaging look 30 + years old.

Like Dark said, "anything is possible" but there's far more plausible things to worry about. If you're buying off eBay go by feedback scores to make sure you're dealing with a trustworthy vendor. Otherwise, ignore the NOS blades and there'll be more for the rest of us.

Suna,

Dont worry about him, he is a great guy. I would always trust B&B Vendors!

But ebay has too many, so just becareful who you choose. In case you don't know just ask around here, everyone would be happy to help out.

More speculation, but if you were a maker of fake blades, you probably wouldn't go after the relatively small number of hobbyists who want to shave with NOS DE blades. You'd want to go after the much larger market of mainstream cartridge and DE shavers who are just looking for a bargain on current brands.

As long as vintage blades are in a sealed blister pack, I think there's a high probability that they're genuine. Doesn't necessarily mean they're good, of course, although the Gillette "spoiler" Super Stainless that I tried were excellent.

I wouldn't be to concerned about the counterfeit NOS blade bogeyman. Although they command a premium price, it's only desirable to a select group of individuals. In order for such things to be profitable to the counterfeiter, they would have to produce significant numbers. It would be suspicious that thousands of NOS blades would suddenly be available from an unknown/unreliable source.

Take a look at Gillette Bleue Extra...they're still being sold in boxes of 100 on eBay. They're what...10 years long gone now!? I have seen a vendor with at least 20,000 blades sold of Gillette Bleue Extra since last year. Does that not make you wonder if there is a production of black market blades?

They're still being produced (in St. Petersburg, if I recall correctly), but that vendor (rareup31, I think) is selling from production stock made in France, as I recall. Just because a blade is out of production does not mean that there can't be a lot of them laying around. There's another vendor on the 'bay that is selling NOS Schick Platinum Pluses and he has thousands of them, at a buck a blade -- alas, he won't cut a discount for volume purchases.

To obtain 25,000+ blades that were produced more than 10 years ago seems like an oddity though. No?

There's got to be millions of those things in warehouses all over the world.
You can fit a couple thousand blades inside a hefty briefcase - extrapolate that out to the crates of them different people are sitting on.

Not necessarily. It's not uncommon to come across old stock that's been sitting in a warehouse/lost in transit/liquidated at auction.

I worked for a couple years for a store that specialized in salvage items and fabric. One time, we got a huge shipment of 1960's vintage fabric that had been sitting in storage for 40 years.

If they were fake/counterfeit, which they are not, then they are doing a great job making them because the Bleue Extra Blades from rareup are fantastic. :w00t:

Try some and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Has onyone tried blades from this vendor? Seems too good of a deal to be true. Other vendors sell 20 blades for the same price.

I've bought GBEs from her on two occasions (totaling over 1300 blades), Gillette Platinum Pluses once (400, of the (French made?) ones in plastic dispensers (Not the US-made ones, obviously)), and I just placed an order for 600 Gillette Super Silvers. She's got the genuine article. The only knock is the cost of shipping, in my opinion, which inclines me to make more substantial orders from her, when I do, so that I can reduce the per-unit shipping premium to an acceptable percentage. She's very easy to work with. I recommend her very highly.
