Nivea For Men, Cool Kick Wash and Shave Gel, 2 in 1

I bought a tube of Nivea For Men, Cool Kick, Arctic Breeze, Wash and Shave Gel which my supermarket had discounted heavily as they were getting rid of it.

The back of the tube says to use a little bit to clean your face, and a bit more for use as a shave gel.

I tested it out using the same Merkur Slant and Gillette blade I've been using to test other creams and soaps recently. It lathered up slightly as I massaged it into my beard. Shaving seemed smooth and easy, my only issue being that as the gel wasn't very viscous, blobs kept dropping off the razor well before they would have dropped off when using other more viscous creams and gels I've tried.

And then, I felt nothing untoward, but suddenly had two big drops of blood on my throat where I hadn't seen any for many months, and a minor nick on my chin as well. The alum block showed up quite a few stings as well.

My conclusion is that one had better use pre-shave oil with this gel. The washing function of this gel, I actually liked more than the regular Nivea Double Action face wash.

Has anybody else come across it?

Renato

I just finished a tube of it yesterday. I didn't even try to shave with it, got too many other wonderful creams to consider it. I only used it as a pre-shave wash, and I wasn't too impressed with it. First of all, the tube I got (and the few others that were on the shelf) was only about half-full, so that was a bit of a rip-off. Secondly, I got absolutely no chilling effect from it whatsoever. Bad tube, perhaps? Also, it's very hard to find in my area, only one out of the million Wal-Marts around me stocked it. Sounds like it might be more available overseas or something. I was pretty excited to try this stuff, after hearing about it on here, but it ended up being a bit of a let-down.

I'm starting to get acne breakouts, so I picked up the Walgreen's generic equivalent of Neutrogena face wash (the orange stuff in the pump bottle) to replace the Nivea with.

My tube was nice and full.

It's worth having several of these face washes to see if any work better than others for acne.

Lately though, most of these washes leave one's face a tad moisturised, when many years ago, they tended to dry skin out a bit (but you moisturised it later with an aftershave balm - I was fond of Proraso). I still have a stash of Johnson &Johnson Clean and Clear soap bars that have since disappeared from the shops, which did an excellent job of cleaning and drying out skin - and were ideal for use before electric shaving. Fortunately, there is another brand of medicated soap called Sapoderm sold down here that does a similar job.

But I'll always check out any new offerings from Nivea For Men. I have a warm spot for them, as they were the first to market an inexpensive men's skincare range down here a dozen years ago, that worked well. Before they came along, my only real choices had been Lab Series or Clinique.
