Newspaper? Balsa?

I've heard folks talking about stropping on newspaper or balsa wood. I'm curious, is there any trick to either of these mediums?

Do you lay the newspaper over some stiff flat surface like a board or the edge of a counter? Is the balsa used specifically crafted balsa strops or is it just balsa wood from your local hardware or craft store?

Curious, but I couldn't find any posts on specific technique. If there is a post that I missed, feel free to just point the way.

Wrap it tightly around your hone, and tape it down. Your counter may work but it's hard to keep the newspaper from rumpling and bunching. Boards are rarely flat, and even if lapped will promptly warp again.
