Newb seeking advice for lathering shave cream !

Hello all, I'm still very new to traditional wet shaving and prior to today the only cream / soap I've used is RR Don Marco. I recently purchased some Proraso blue from shoebox and today was my first day using it ! I've watched some videos and read some tutorials on it but was not producing a very rich lather, I feel like I've got the Don Marco producing some pretty good lather but am seeking advice on the proraso, any tips or suggestions would be great ! I did manage to get alright shave not quite DFS but I've had better with my RR :thumbup1:.

I've not used any of the poraso's. However, the Musgo Real shaving cream tends to lather very well. I have the Spiced Citrus but they have several scents.

Beware of using to much water as well.
You lather should be able to support "peaks". If it's all bubbely you have to much water compared to cream/soap.

I find that Proraso, both their soaps and creams, tend to be "thirsty" and need a good deal of water. Since you are using the cream, start with only a damp brush and a little more than an almond's amount of product (possibly more if you have very hard water). Do not be afraid to add water as you lather-up, just do so with a few drops at a time.

After some trial and error, you will no doubt consistently achieve the creamy lubricating lather which has made Proraso so beloved in our wet-shaving community.

Good advice above. I'll repeat some for emphasis. I use and like Proraso Blue.

Start with just damp brush, especially if using badger (badger holds more water than you think.) Boar doesn't soak up as much, but still needs a couple yoyos.

Use more product. PB is not that concentrated, and you get a big tube for ~$12.

Whip until it just looks pastey. This cream takes awhile. Keep adding water slowly, a couple drops at a time, and whip till fully integrated. I actually don't quite whip this up to shave ready on purpose because it can break easier than other creams. As you get the feel for what a cream should look like and feel like after whipping, it is easier to take it to just under. Then I lather good on the face to finish it off.

Good luck, patience, keep trying, and welcome!

I have the Proraso Red. I had trouble with lather my first few shaves (face lather). My trials told me I needed more water AND more product.

Original plan: Dried off after shower, peanut sized dollop on brush, swirl on face. resulted in what I consider dry lather. Just kinda pasty.

New plan: Leave face/neck alone when drying after shower, apply Proraso to finger as I would toothpaste on a tooth brush. Smear Proraso on neck/cheeks, swirl brush on face. I've only attempted 2 passes, and needed to dip the brush tips gently in water to get the 2nd lather similar to the first.

Hope this helps.

Awesome thanks guys ! I'll try more product and more water next time. Evan I usually do the same as you I leave my face and neck alone when drying off after the shower so I'll stick with that and add more water/product to the mix.

I got a cheap plastic bowl that hair dressers use for hair dye for a buck at the dollar store and played with the different soaps and creams. Like was said above sometimes you need to add a bit more water. To the point where it's not runny, but not dry feeling either.

Play and practice. It's fun.

Hey guys just completed my shave and used a bit more product and water (maybe too much as it was a bit runny at first) and was able to whip up much better lather this time with my proraso blue. It felt like it protected my face better and resulted in a better shave almost DFS. Part of it might have been that I put a new blade in too, I used a Zorrick super stainless and quite liked it sharp enough but not too sharp. For my post shave I used my RR alum left it for a minute then did a CWR and went downstairs had lunch and cooled off. I then went back upstairs and wet my face and put on a bit of proraso pre/post which I used for pre shave too. So all in all it went better than my first go around with my proraso products any suggestions or feedback would be great, thanks .

Thanks, I felt much better and more comfortable with it this time too. It's just one of those things that takes a bit of playing around I guess. Have you ever tried the real shaving company moisturizing shave cream ? Was thinking of giving it a try next time.
