What's new

NEW: Trumper Coral Skin TONIC

I just saw this on the Trumper website tonight. It's a new product, but the description is rather vague, so it's hard to tell exactly what it's supposed to be, or how it differs from the Skin Food. One obvious difference is lack of color. My guess is that it's a more liquid, alcohol-free aftershave splash of sorts, but that's just a guess. Anyone have any insight into this?

Ah, yes, the..."virtual requisite of the grooming ritual..."!!!

GFT marketing guys have been whiffing their own stuff heavily!!

Went into Trumpers today and they told me it was a substitute for alum and to be used as aftershave.

I think it's rose water + a few other ingredients.

I asked the shop assistant whether it was to replace their skin food but she said they were now recommending skin food as a pre-shave only.

I mentioned that the tonic alone may not be moisturising enough and the she pointed me to their moisturising lotion which has mineral oil as it's main ingredient.

I imagine the new tonic to be similar to Dr Harris's pink aftershave.

Thanks, Niko. Very interesting info all around. I'd be interested to know what those "few other ingredients" are, and just how close the Tonic formulation comes to the D.R. Harris Pink.

FWIW, I think Trumper's moisturizer is just OK. It works, and it is scent-free, but I find it a bit heavy. I'm not so thrilled it's mineral-oil based; nor do I like the fact it contains PABA as a sunscreen. Suffice it to say, it's not my first choice of moisturizer.

Well, seek and ye shall find. Trumper now lists the Tonic ingredients on their website, which are as follows:

Aqua, Parfum (Fragrance), Polysorbate-20, Citronellol, 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-Diol, Geraniol, Linalool, Citral.

I have to say, based on the ingredients, it seems the Tonic is little more than nicely scented water. Polysorbate 20 is a surfactant that makes liquids easier to spread; hence, the Tonic might feel "smoother" going on than plain water. 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (try saying that three times fast!) is a preservative. Citronellol, Geraniol, Linalool and Citral are components of the fragrance that have to be listed under IFRA regulations.

So, yeah...scented water. I can't fathom why Trumper would say this is more appropriate as an aftershave than the Skin Food. (And, for what it's worth, the Trumper website bills both the Skin Food and the Tonic as pre-shaves and aftershaves.) I wouldn't balk at trying a sample should one come my way in an order some time, but it's not like I'm going to go out of my way to buy this stuff.

Thanks for the information, I agree with zou there Jerry, in addition, Trumpers SkinFood is pretty darn good. Next time I'm shopping on their website for postshave goodies I'll be keeping to what I know and like! Thanks

Guys - I'll pop in today and pick some up. It's only a tenner.

I'll let you know how I get on during tomorrow morning's ritual....

Not to derail, but I'm surprised to see them say they only recommend Skin Food as a preshave now? What's the deal with that?

Very noble Niko! Do you have the skinfood to compare?

I do - I have both Sandalwood and Coral.

I picked up the tonic at lunch. I quizzed the guy again on the merits of skin food, tonic and alum.

He said the GFT barbers use the following:

- alum strictly for weepers only, never every day and only on the affected areas of skin. He said they deemed it too harsh for daily use

- skin food used both as a pre shave but also post shave as follows: hot splash.. Skin food on wet skin and then hot towel for 2 minutes to allow for full absorption. Then wipe the remains that have not been absorbed off with a towel

- tonic - to be used as an everyday aftershave splash , he mentioned it was disinfecting, toning etc but more importantly represented their in-house view that alcoholic splashes on freshly shaved skin should be avoided

So anyway - all interesting stuff. I'm going to substitute my alum bloc with this tonic tomorrow followed by usual moisturiser.

Buy the preshave. Buy the shaving cream. Buy the aftershave splash. Then get the balm. Dont forget all the preshave oils before this pre shave. Marketing. $$$$$$$$$$$$

I'm looking forward to your thoughts. Thanks Niko

Perfect as a pre-shave,
soothing as an after shave,
refreshing as scalp friction.

Ummmm, what? "Scalp friction" sounds horrible and I want no part of it. That's a pretty unimpressive list of ingredients too. Think I'll be just sticking with witch hazel on this one.

Skin food recommend as only pre shave now??

Seems like marketing to me! "" Let's bring out a tonic to be used aftershave. But what about skin food?? Urmm...pre shave only! ""

How can they all of a sudden decide to change recommendation on a product that has been sold as post shave, now as only pre shave?

ill have that much product on my face pre shave, that I'll just be shaving product! Haha!

Gents

Gave this a little try this evening (as I am home alone!) using my risk free set up which is erasmic shaving cream, semogue 1520, 34c and a gillette blue.

What can I say...smells like Coral Skin Food. Texture is very slightly thicker than water...almost like stale water that has sat in a bottle for many days.

It is incredibly light and goes on almost like a splash of water. As you can imagine...no sting...no burn...no sensation whatsoever really..although I will say that is leaves a certain silky softness to your skin which feels pretty good although my skin doesn't feel nourished in anyway similar to how it feels after skin food.

I really really can't see this being of much use in the event of shaving irritation but it felt and smelt nice to put on.

In summary: a nice to have but not worth purchasing on its own.
