What's new

NEW to me

I used a vintage Gillette NEW for the first time today. It was my fist shave with an open comb after using, primarily, an EJ DE89L for the last 6 months.

I was apprehensive (ok, downright terrified) about trying an open comb. However, the design helped me feel the blade on my face and, as a result, keep pressure to a minimum. The thought that I'd see rows in the lather if my angle were off really helped, too. In any event, I got a great 3 pass shave (well, except for 2 small nicks). In my "irrational exuberance," I can't help but think that a razor like this would be great for a newbie who's struggling with pressure or angle issues.

I get a great shave with a New. It may be a little too aggressive for someone first starting. However, it is really useful for refining your technique once you have a little experience. I really like it for those occasions when I have missed a day shaving. It would also be a good choice for those men with heavier beards.

I picked up a short and a long handle New Open Comb a week or so ago. I think they are a bit too aggressive for me. I got more kicks than usual moving around my chin (normally one of my strongest areas). The short comb seemed a bit more mild though. I'll keep them around and see how I do with them as time passes. At worst they look great with their gold finish in my black stand.

The Gillette New is my everyday shaver. I must have 25 or 30 different razors but since I shaved with a New, the rest just set idle.
