My Merkur 39c Barber Pole slant razor arrived today. It is only the second DE razor I have purchased; my first was an Edwin Jagger de89L.
Maybe that was a mistake. Maybe if my first razor had been a Merkur I wouldnt have felt so disappointed by the razor I received today.
Let me first say I have not yet shaved with this razor. Ive got a new Feather propped up against my brush, just waiting for me to get home, peel off its wrapper, and twist her in.
I hope it shaves as well as Ive heard. I hope that I dont find the alignment issue to be too big of a deal I hope I can forgive it for not being perfectly gorgeous, like the Edwin Jagger.
The Merkur isnt hideous by any stretch of the imagination. Its got a tough, Im a tool personality, and thats okay. I just find it odd that such a raved-about brand, and a razor typically more expensive than the EJ, wouldnt want to take a little more pride in its appearance. There are numerous little scuffs and scratches. Nothing deep or disfiguring, not at all. It just looks like the handle was thrown into a box with a hundred other handles; the head into a box with a hundred other heads. Eventually somebody grabbed one of each, screwed them together, tossed them in a box and off it went. They are the same sort of scratches you might find on a brand-new crescent-wrench. The Edwin Jagger, on the other hand, looks as though each piece is lovingly wrapped in satin and stored in a jewelry box until it is assembled. It is then blessed by a priest, kissed by a virgin, and finally, shipped.
Id read in several reviews that the barber pole grooves seemed shallow and sharp. I see now what they meant. They do, indeed, seem shallow and sharp. They are deep enough, certainly the razor has plenty of grip. The lines arent actually sharp I pressed as hard as I could and moved my finger around them and there was no danger of actually being cut. But theres a roughness to it; an un-finished quality.
Oh well. Im happy to have it, especially if it shaves as well as Ive heard. But in the future I will have to **** an eyebrow whenever I hear someone raving about the wonderful fit and finish of a Merkur razor.
