New Merkur 39c Slant - 1st Impressions

My Merkur 39c “Barber Pole” slant razor arrived today. It is only the second DE razor I have purchased; my first was an Edwin Jagger de89L.

Maybe that was a mistake. Maybe if my first razor had been a Merkur I wouldn’t have felt so disappointed by the razor I received today.

Let me first say – I have not yet shaved with this razor. I’ve got a new Feather propped up against my brush, just waiting for me to get home, peel off its wrapper, and twist her in.

I hope it shaves as well as I’ve heard. I hope that I don’t find the alignment issue to be too big of a deal… I hope I can forgive it for not being perfectly gorgeous, like the Edwin Jagger.

The Merkur isn’t hideous by any stretch of the imagination. It’s got a tough, “I’m a tool” personality, and that’s okay. I just find it odd that such a raved-about brand, and a razor typically more expensive than the EJ, wouldn’t want to take a little more pride in its appearance. There are numerous little scuffs and scratches. Nothing deep or disfiguring, not at all. It just looks like the handle was thrown into a box with a hundred other handles; the head into a box with a hundred other heads. Eventually somebody grabbed one of each, screwed them together, tossed them in a box and off it went. They are the same sort of scratches you might find on a brand-new crescent-wrench. The Edwin Jagger, on the other hand, looks as though each piece is lovingly wrapped in satin and stored in a jewelry box until it is assembled. It is then blessed by a priest, kissed by a virgin, and finally, shipped.

I’d read in several reviews that the “barber pole” grooves seemed shallow and sharp. I see now what they meant. They do, indeed, seem shallow and sharp. They are deep enough, certainly – the razor has plenty of grip. The lines aren’t actually sharp – I pressed as hard as I could and moved my finger around them and there was no danger of actually being cut. But there’s a roughness to it; an un-finished quality.

Oh well. I’m happy to have it, especially if it shaves as well as I’ve heard. But in the future I will have to **** an eyebrow whenever I hear someone raving about the “wonderful fit and finish” of a Merkur razor.

Wow -- thanks for the head's up. I had always heard that Merkur products were lacking in the quality department, but your description really brought that to life. Thanks for the honest opinion!

You should rest easy. You have purchased a superb hunk of metal. I too have the DE89L. They are very, very different razors. Thrown.clear, I completely agree with your criticisms of the Merkur v.s the Jagger. But you need to enjoy each of them for what they are. The 39C is a brute. I don't find Merkur's slant head overly aggressive. With attention, it delivers a very smooth, nick free shave. I am confident you are going to find the 39C an extraordinary razor, and you are hearing this from a devout vintage Gillette/Schick/Gem/EverReady man!

I guess that's why vintage Merkur Slants are sought after.

I have two Merkur razors (progress & 39c), and I have not experienced any quality issues. I think you will find that the 39c provides a very close and smooth shave. The EJ is a beautiful razor, but for me it does not give me any where close to as good of shave as my slant.

Please update us on how the first shave goes.

I certainly hope so, and I don't doubt it. The 39c certainly feels like a well constructed piece of metal. It's got great ballance, and I love the handle size (I'm a pretty big-handed fella).

I guess I was just hoping for a repeat of that dreamy, "Oh my God I'm in love!" feeling I got when I un-boxed the EJ.

But I guess there's nothing like your first love...

I like a lot the shave that my 37c gives me. Recently i decide to buy another one and offer it to a friend : the next pic shows how the razor head looks, despite its brand new.

So yes i too think that Merkur have some quality problem...

I've send it back to the vendor for a refund; He didnt want to give me an exchange because he said that "all the underside heads on this model show the same feature"

Well i've learn a lesson.

My 39c is perfectly finished. I guess there are some bad ones, but if it's the underside (where you can't see it) as long as it doesn't affect the performance of the razor I personally wouldn't let it bother me.

I know it's not the point as when you buy a razor new you expect it to be 100% but if you can't see it when it's put together - does it really matter?

I'd get a refund/exchange on mine only if the outside was damaged or the chrome was peeling off, but then again that's me lol

Edit- your's does actually look used though, so I would be concerned, sorry I got confused looking at your pic

I like the 39C slant and it's probably my favourite razor, followed closely by the Futur. However, I do agree that the machining marks are not indicative of quality finish. Just about every 39C I've seen has them. Nonetheless, I mostly judge a razor by how it shaves and the 39C does an excellent job.
