What's new

I`m in the mood for Oud...

Out of curiosity I went on the Rogue perfume site but did not see the listing for your find. I presume they are out, or did I just miss the listing?

I don`t know Jack to be honest - the best best response is usually ringing a human on the telephone; preferably a manager in my experience.

Websites do not always update fast enough plus you have to send a man/woman to the warehouse to check stock in real time then report back to you via the manager on the line whilst you`re talking to them - only way to ascertain 100% what`s there or not.

I would dearly love to smell some of these ouds. Sadly I haven’t the means to afford anything like that. I probably don’t have the nose to appreciate them fully either.

They were only £26 for 2 x 12ml Barbablanca - definitely not fakes - too much water under the bridge and hundreds of thousands of air miles and yacht/ship miles.

I was an international salesman for well over twenty years - flying 2-6 times a month to Oz, NZ, Africa, Asia, N America, S America, ME , Europe and Med - everywhere.I met a lot of people.

Even if they were new old stock - all the better because they only get better with age Jack.

You don`t have to be a connoisseur Jack - you will know what`s good, middle of the road or dire - instinctively. Then if you travel and socialise a lot or even mingle a lot you will bump into people and you will know by a whiff or one inward breath that they are wearing a decent oud that`s been layered - not an all in one Western edp perfume or cologne that is nowhere near as good; not even in the same universe.

People like that employ personal perfumers or know pro perfumers - like the best cars - they don`t need to advertise - at all.
I know because that`s my job.

I bought both bottles, and I thank you very much for the help! Now for the (too long) wait!

Oh brilliant Barbablanca Jack, I hope you like them when they come next week; they dispatch promptly; typically a couple of days delivery.

This oudh can be worn singly but will benefit greatly if layered with absolutes and essential oils and if they are not to hand, put the oud on first and then another cologne or aftershave that is not too sweet; because so is this.

So think herbal, spicy, musky, amber, floral and fruit notes, for example, ask your other half what she thinks, experiment - have fun.

One thing is for sure, you will get noticed and get more attention because it is so so different to Western and modern young Man/ Unisex scents and remember a little goes a long way - Good Luck Mate.
DEHNAL OUDH QADEEM 12ML

I have another one on order which is a slight step up; looking forward to it.

@roaduck

Do you have any updates about your latest purchase.

Reading this thread made me want to give this a try. So I placed an order on the fist link. I’m looking forward to seeing what my experience will be like.

Will let you know

Oud is very personal because it varies so so much but even with the relatively young Cambodi Qadeem ouds I got above, they`re great singly but don`t over do it, they project and can dominate other scents in the room - like Lion urine in the savannah so layer it with your favourite lighter scents that are not too sweet (as oud is sweet and Oriental)

A neighbour dropped in the other day, smelt the oud and said straight away that it smelt very smoky but he is not experienced or well-travelled and couldn`t differentiate the other complex layers or understand that it needed blending to work - like layers of clothes or different herbs and spices in a curry for example.

Oud has stood the test of time and is the base for many fashionable scents but the older, more complex ones are not experienced that much in the West so my suggestion is go to a cosmopolitan part of your city, mingle and ask about oud and attars, places you can smell the raw wood oil to test first and also get advice about layering and blending.

It is so personal it has to be done in person , preferably with a knowledgeable chaperone so I would ask where a good local Asian / Middle Eastern perfume house is or coffee shop or better in a private dwelling with older, well-travelled folks once you socialise and mingle regularly.

It`s not like shopping for aftershave in a big chemist or department store; it is much more complex and deep; it`s an adventure and journey of discovery; I`m still learning decades later and I`m a herbalist; perfumery is a big subject - like languages, cultures and computers.

Good Luck ksblazer !
